News teaser thread

Post by Ross »

Stuff lined up for release on FSOLDigital soon. That's a FSOL soon, though, so have patience:

Broadcast of Varients mini-album
More EPs from EMS : Piano and Blackhill Transmitter
New Amorphous Androgynous single entitled "Mother"
Seafar EP
And a single called Open Window - I am guessing from this that it'll be The Jazz Mags, given the tracks Open Window and Open Door were taken from those sessions. Wondering if this'll be a FSOL single or a new alias.
EBS9 - the series continues with something slightly different.
Sturmazdale album (woo-hoo!)

Didn't honestly expect to see a mention of the Jazz Mags again, but there you go, looking forward to going through all these when they're out.

None of this is confirmed, but some rumoured stuff...

Environments 5 may be a double album
Possible 'best of Environments' vinyl release
EBS9 might be released on VHS (!)

Ha. I still have one. Never give up on analogue.
I think a VHS will actually tie in quite well with their direction over the past few years, there's definitely a move towards a kind of old fashioned/retro type aesthetic... lomo style photography, hand-written titles, warped/decayed photos on the more recent Envrionments and Archive albums, EMS : Piano recorded to tape, heavy use of samples about early electronic music and analogue synths in the EBS transmissions, a definite kind of nostalgic melancholy to a lot of the piano stuff that's working its way in, dymo tape for the recent EBS art... in some ways, this isn't all that different to what they were doing in the '90s, but it's no longer futuristic, but fits more into 'what the future used to look like' kind of future-retro type stuff, which they seem to be embracing. Brian mentioned something about doing some tapes on FSOLDigital at some point, too.

Needless to say I love all of this :D

This is why I was surprised to learn you not being a fan of OPN - completely the aesthetic he's been going for over the years:

Yeah, I definitely prefer that kind of thing to some of his recent stuff, but I find a lot of that hauntology stuff really... samey, I suppose. I love the way FSOL are having some of that, then dropping in a dusty piano track and some field recordings, then some rustic sounding acoustic percussion and a sinister sample of someone talking. Adds so much depth to the same kind of mood.

I had a track on a VHS release a couple of years ago. Believe it or not, some people do still like old analogue formats.
