FSOL - Electric Brain Storms Vol.2 (PBS Radio, The Pod Room)
[radio mix] (15.11.2008)
The second mix in the EBS series was supposed to come out in early August 2008 on PBS Radio in Australia, but that broadcast never happened. It was supposed to promote Environments II, it sure has a lot of (at that point) unreleased tracks from the Archives and the Environments series. So, this mix ended up as an exclusive opening of The Rod Room (15 Nov 2008), a section on the FSOLdigital.com website that dropped (at the opening) dozens of Kiss mixes, ISDN transmissions, MPB mixes, EBS mixes and a few other mixes that didn't belong into any of the series. It was heavenly to finally see official versions with better quality of all those bootleg mixes that we took from the Disenchanted FTP and listened to for years. Most of the mixes (well, all of them except the ISDN ones) were taken down few years later due to copyright issues, but true fans had plenty of time to get them.
Technically EBS 2 was released after EBS 3 (which transmitted on 26 Sep 2008), but I'll review EBS 2 first for continuity's sake. EBS 2 is a 3 hour mix and it's the longest one in the EBS series to date. The last time they did 3 hour shows was the Kiss mixes period in 1992/93, about 15 years ago. FSOL doing mixes and remixes really kicked off around this time, so in the next 5 years most of their work was mix transmissions, mixing, remixing, re-imagining, soundtracks, producing, and releasing albums/singles from friends and fans on FSOLdigital.com. Literally, if we set aside the next two volumes of Archives and Environments, everything else they did was mixing and remixing for 5 years. That was the front of the store of course, while in the back new plans and new compositions were brewing all the time. Astonishing... Their remixing run didn't end in 2013, but they at least started releasing new original material at that point.
EBS 2 has it all - an awesome mix of ambient, movie samples, experimental krautrock, early electronic avant-garde & musique concrete... should I go on? The names in this mix are like a journey through the history of electronic music, from it's very early roots in the '50s to the present day. A F---ing beginners lesson for all the ignorant people who are/were convincing me that the rock genres were older than the electronic music.
So, we have the standard promotion of unreleased FSOL material, announcing Environments 3 (some of it is still unreleased, as usual), more previews of the EMS : Piano project, more teasers of the upcoming Zeebox 3 album, some unreleased Yage tracks, and last but not least - Clyde Port Authority - a film for the Scottish Film Board with music from Bill Dougans (Brian's dad). There were rumors that this album/soundtrack would eventually be released, but at this point I think it probably won't. Bill Dougans passed away in 2013, and Brian formed the Blackhill Transmitter project as a tribute. Blackhill also uses recordings made by Bill. Are they the same recordings of the Clyde Port Authority, well, that remains unknown, for now. Also, there were more picture hints about the Clyde Port Authority project in the limited mini-book called Artworks in 2014, so... I guess there's still hope.

00:00 Transmission intro
00:27 The Future Sound of London - Heart Sick - (unreleased, later on FSOLdigital.com, 2010)
- Appeared on Environments 3 in 2010. This track dates back to 2006 from the San Monta sessions and the Kinetic event. Interesting stand alone track, but it didn't quite fit on Environments 3.
04:21 Eno / Moebius / Roedelius - Broken Head - (Sky Records, 1985)
- This one was actually mixed in Kiss T1 back in 1992, talking about flashbacks - we'll hear a lot of them in the EBS series. Begegnungen II is a project by Brian Eno and Moebius / Roedelius aka Cluster aka Kluster, one of the very first kraut / industrial acts hailing from Germany.

04:27 Delia Derbyshire & Barry Bermange - Dreams Part 4 (Sea) - (BBC, 1964)
- The spoken part over the previous track... This unreleased album was used in the Kiss mix series, but this very same sequence was first used in MPB 6 in 2005.

06:56 Pierre Henry & Pierre Schaeffer - Symphonie Pour Un Homme Seul: Erotica - (1950)
- Schaeffer was a French composer, noted as the inventor of musique concrete. He is generally acknowledged as being the first composer to make music using magnetic tape. Henry makes (in 1949) the decisive meeting with Pierre Schaeffer, with whom he forms the GRM (Group of musical research), dedicated to the experimentation in "concrete music". Talk about standing on the shoulders of giants...
07:11 Fizzarum - Phut of Plex - (City Centre Offices, 1999)
- A Russian IDM duo consisting of Dimitry Dubov & Dimitry Letahovsky
- ( )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Fizzarum-Phut-Of ... lease/1544 )
10:30 Pauline Oliveros - Procession (Peregrinacion) - (Deep Listening, 1998)
- American Composer, performer and author, born in 1932. In the early '60s, Oliveros, with Morton Subotnick and Ramon Sender, formed the San Francisco Tape Music Center, and there she began her pioneering work with electronics and tape. In performances, Oliveros uses an accordion which has been re-tuned in two different systems of her just intonation in addition to electronics to alter the sound of the accordion. Throughout the years, she has developed the Extended Instrument System (EIS), a sophisticated setup of digital signal processors designed for use in live performances.
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Pauline-Oliveros ... ase/658887 )
11:41 Luc Ferrari - Presque Rien Avec Filles - (BV Haast Records, 1989)
- Another legend/giant. He joined "Groupe de Musique concrète" in 1958, remaining until 1966, and collaborated with Pierre Schaeffer in setting up "Groupe de recherches musicales" (1958). In 1965 and 1966 he produced with Gérard Patris for ORTF "Les grandes répétitions", a series of television documentaries on contemporary music.

12:11 - Martin Sheen as Capt. Willard - "He knew more about what I was going to do than I did..." - (from Apocalypse Now, 1979 movie)
12:26 The Advisory Circle - Hocusing for Beginners - (Ghost Box, 2008)
- Jon Brooks composes music for for film and television, produces and engineers music for other artists, and is the long-term mastering engineer for Trunk Records, and also runs the record label Cafe Kaput.
- What's even more interesting here is the label, Ghost Box, an independent music venture (ran by Jim Jupp and Julian House, the graphic designer) for artists who find inspiration in library music albums, folklore, vintage electronics, and the school music room. Inspired by spooky vintage electronics of the 1970s, the label soon found itself described as part of an emerging 'hauntology' scene. FSOL use a lot of their releases, like they are subscribed or something...

15:00 Herbert Eimert & Robert Beyer - Klangstudie II - (1951-1962)
- Herbert Eimert (born 1897 in Germany) was a composer and a musicologist who studied at the Music Conservatory of Cologne. He worked as a journalist and joined the station as a music editor and programmer. Together with sound engineer & colleague Robert Beyer (born 1901 in Germany), he succeeded in founding the famous Electronic Studio in 1951. From 1953, Eimert invited Karlheinz Stockhausen & Gottfried Michael Koenig to work in the studio he directed until 1962.
- I must say I knew nothing about these legends. Will keep digging further.

28:15 ????? - ?????
- Unknown part, but I do hear some Mello Hippo Disco Show (Slo-Mo) samples.
29:22 Steven Jesse Bernstein - The Sport (Part Two) - (Sub Pop, 1992)
- Samples from this largely spoken word album (Prison) by Steven Jesse Bernstein were used in the Kiss mixes (1992) what the album was brand new. The most famous bit 'More Noise Please' was first heard on the '95 BBC mix and later on the legendary MPB 1. This bit however is for the first time used here in this mix.
- Steven Jay "Jesse" Bernstein (1950–1991) was a Jewish American underground writer and performance artist who is most famous for his recordings with Sub Pop records and close relationship with William S. Burroughs. Bernstein's substance abuse issues and mental illness contributed to his provocative local celebrity, though they ultimately culminated in his suicide.

29:44 Arthur Lyman - Ebb Tide - (HiFi Records, 1960)

36:17 Bruce Haack - Electric to Me Turn - (Columbia, 1970)
- Canadian Bruce Clinton Haack (b. 1931) is one of the pioneers of electronic music during the 50's and 60's. Prolific composer behind a huge span of wildly creative, from electronic children's songs to satanic music; as well as being an inventor of weird musical instruments like the Theremin-inspired Magic Wand and the Dermatron, a device that worked off the natural conductivity of the human body. Haack's robotic songs were a precedent to the work of Synth Pop artists from the 70's such as Kraftwerk and Gary Numan, and his quasy-psychedelic electronic music was a clear influence in the Space Rock music.

38:56 Morton Feldman - Voices and Cello - (1973)
- Feldman (b. 1926 in NYC) was a pioneer of indeterminate music, a development associated with the experimental New York School of composers also including John Cage, Christian Wolff, and Earle Brown. Feldman's works are characterized by notational innovations that he developed to create his characteristic sound: rhythms that seem to be free and floating; pitch shadings that seem softly unfocused; a generally quiet and slowly evolving music; recurring asymmetric patterns.

39:25 Andy Fairley - Jack The Biscuit - (On-U Sound, 1991)
- Andy Fairley (Bristol, UK) was a modern-day poet; a shrewd observer of the injustices and insanities of the modern world, his prose often tackled head-on issues of the moment such as the state of politics, privatisation and the plight of the underclasses. His raw style of vocal delivery perfectly and powerfully complimented the reality issues he often addressed.

The following year he joined forces with Michael Rother and they formed Neu!, releasing their self-titled debut LP on German label Brain. Their music was heavily innovative and influential, melting distorted guitars with metronomic drumming, noise effects and tapes. Neu! were highly influential on industrial, noise and experimental music.

- Electric Brain Storms Vol.2 - deconstructed and explained - headphones on - read away...
(scroll all the way to the end of the post in the 'spoiler' field if you want just a list of the tracks)

- ( )

- ( http://www.discogs.com/Nurse-With-Wound ... ase/216733 )

A pioneer of indeterminacy in music, electro-acoustic music, and non-standard use of musical instruments, Cage was one of the leading figures of the post-war avant-garde. He began to use electronic devices (variable-speed turntables in Imaginary Landscape n.1, 1939) and invented the 'prepared piano', which involves placing a variety of objects between the strings of a grand piano in order to create an effective percussion orchestra under the control of two hands.
