Barking is just horrible. Really big fan of theirs even their two uber-cheesy albums as the previous lineup of Underworld (pre the dubnobass album) but yeah, bought the special big box set 'blindly' and forced myself to listen to it several times. Just horrible.

I wasn't to big on Barking either. OM Records I thought was sort of a weird pick for Underworld, even though in the past I've enjoyed a fair amount of music that's released on that label, despite pumping out the most generic house music available.. Even Underworld's collab with High Contrast (who put out a couple of my favorite D&B records of the late 90's/early 2000's) I thought was kind of shit. I suppose I'll forever favor Second Toughest and Beaucoup Fish (my personal favorite AND introduction to the group back in the late 90's) over all their more recent material. Hell, even A Hundred Days Off is great - Two Months Off, being one my 'poppier' favorites. That video still puts me in a good mood every time I see it. Everything Everything is still one of my favorite live DVDs.. Dark & Long (Dark Train) is superb, Trainspotting I'm sure has something to do with my love for that one, and even their pre-Dubnobass years (like Pete said) I find enjoyable in all its super-cheesiness. Pretty decent pop music in the 80's - right up there with Ministry's "With Sympathy" if anyone's familiar with that one...

Fucking hell Barking is bad. Quite enjoyed some of it initially, but soon grew to hate it. Think I like three songs over.both discs of the deluxe edition. And of course it's all co-produced by other artists so it's hardly an Underworld album. It doesn't have any of their signature sounds.
I think for an ambient fan, Oblivion With Bells and Dubnobasswithmyheadman are the best introductions.

Dubnobass and second toughest are my favourite underworld albums but i prefer their singles as they always included new tracks that were more downbeat and chilled.Barking,i think, was done purely so they could afford to buy new equipment/upgrade their studio. It was their most commercial stuff and is pretty pants in all departments. Now they've both got their individual albums out there...edgeland from hyde and the trance soundtrack from smith i full expect them to get back to what they were good at.
currently listening to
brothomstates - claro
doyeq - soundspheres
touched - macmillan electronic album...epic and for a worthy cause
still loving foals -holy fire album

Second Toughest never really clicked for me. A bit too rhythm-based for my tastes, definitely prefer the lusher sounds of Beaucoup Fish onwards.
And yeah, they knocked out a few good singles packages in the '90s, particularly Dark & Long (the 70 minute Dutch release being a whole new album) and Pearl's Girl over its various formats containing some of their best work (Oich Oich, Cherry Pie, Puppies, Tin There).

Orbital you need the Green and Brown albums and Snivilisation.
Underworld will be difficult as Karl Hyde is the singer. If you can get the Dark & Long EPs, go that way. The four track UK release and 7 track Dutch release are largely instrumental. Dubnobasswithmyheadman and Oblivion With Bells are the least 'songy' ones.

Inspired by The Cure track, I decided to dive into their huge discography (which I've been meaning to do for a while), so far listened to the first 4 albums.. "Seventeen Seconds" being my favorite so far, "In Your House" -> "A Forest" is a pretty kick ass section.
I also listen to The Art Of Noise - The Seduction Of Claude Debussy every winter.. or rather some selected tracks from that, the production on it is just jaw dropping, genius.
Some very familiar names on that Macmillan Cancer Support album, but it just so massive that I need the time to get into that.

Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography are fantastic albums. After that I lose interest.

The Cure are great. Pornography, Disintegration and Blood Flowers are my favourites. Self-titled and 4:13 Dream are great too. Shame they seem to have stopped recording stuff.
