Herd Killing (at 0:16) samples the opening of Nierika by Dead Can Dance (4AD, 1996) - this album came out only 4 months before Dead Cities! (possible hoax sample??)
Massive (nitpicky, probably totally useless) bump for the Dead Cities review.

I don't think FSOL sampled Nierika. This sample appears to have been used by Culture Beat in 1993, in their hit song Mr. Vain:

It's not useless at all RazorJack - I enjoy this digging around :)

Then I guess it was one of those early 90s CD full with samples and drum lines that lots of bands used...

Or someone maybe knows the real origin of this sample?

Wonder if it's a preset on a synth ? I think back then they used the Roland W-30 & Korg Prophecy

EDIT: Ooh here's a page from Future Music around that era -

It's likely from a sample library or sample CD from the era. I've also heard that the sample was from an episode of The X-files, but even in that case it was probably a stock sample or preset used by Mark Snow while making the soundtrack. By the way, er um? Shouldn't we be discussing this elsewhere?

A flashback to the Kiss Transmission 1 mix here:

http://www.ilovecubus.co.uk/fsolboard/v ... 3875#p3875

- Didn't find much new really, if anything I found more unknown tracks :)

- But I found tons of movie samples, and some of them amazed me... One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest / THX 1138 / Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome / The Last of the Mohicans...

Visiting back the Kiss Transmission 2 mix here:

http://www.ilovecubus.co.uk/fsolboard/v ... 3904#p3904

- Found a bunch of tracks, and a few new unknown ones...

- lots of movie samples again. Silent Running and Apocalypse Now are sampled at least a dozen times each (different samples from the movies) - which is kinda crazy... found out that the unreleased FSOL track that we called Who The Hell Asked You? is actually a mix of Silent Running samples and Environments 1 piano parts.

Found the right tracks from the spoken samples of Bernstein too.

Regarding this mix the quote "Now turn the control eighteen degrees to the left" @3:21 is Jeff Morrow as Exeter from the film This Island Earth (1955)

Another flashback to Kiss T2 Part 2 ( http://www.ilovecubus.co.uk/fsolboard/v ... 3904#p3904 )

05:55 Teste - The Wipe (Sonik Dub) [played at 33rpm] - (Probe Records, 1992)
- Probe Records is a spin-off of +8 owned by Richie Hawtin. This track was even co-produced by Hawtin. I must say this slowed down version sounds even better than the original.
- ( )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Teste-The-Wipe/release/20863 )

29:18 ????? - ????? - environments, female lyricless vocals and some sax samples

29:18 Sergei Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto No.3 in D minor (Op.30) (1909)
- While the environments crackle around, a beautiful piano melody emerges, played by one of the finest pianists of his day and, as a composer, one of the last great representatives of Romanticism in Russian classical music.
- The Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30, composed in 1909 by Sergei Rachmaninoff has the reputation of being one of the most technically challenging piano concertos in the standard classical repertoire.

That Rachmaninoff piece is used on a lot of transmissions between '92 and '94.

Flashback on the Kiss T3 ( http://www.ilovecubus.co.uk/fsolboard/v ... 4006#p4006 )

- INSANE amounts of movie samples, especially from Silent Running (1972) and 2001 A Space Odyssey (1968), also The Last of the Mohicans (1992) and Millennium (1989).

- Atom Heart – Pure Function (1993) - the little girl mumbling finally falls in place in all those mixes...
- Depth Charge - Silver Dub (1991) - how about that?
- Cabaret Voltaire - Belly of The Beast (Back in Babylon) (1993) - one of my new all time favorite tracks!
- DJ Food - Ninja Walk (1992) - so they knew of him even back then... making awesome remixes together 20+ years later...
- Hubert Parry - I Was Glad (Psalm 122), anthem for chorus & organ (or orchestra) (composed in 1902) - another classic weaved in the mix...

Flashback on the Kiss T4 mix ( http://www.ilovecubus.co.uk/fsolboard/v ... 4019#p4019 )

- looks like there are 9000 quotes by HAL 9000 from '2001: A Space Oddysey'
- the amount of unknown pieces on this one worries me... :)

new founds (besides some fixes) are:

23 Skidoo - G-3 Insemination (Part. 1 - A Winter Ritual)
Brian Eno - Final Sunset
Teste - Spatial K -- what a track!!!
Klaus Schulze - Airlights

Flashback on the Kiss T5 mix ( http://www.ilovecubus.co.uk/fsolboard/v ... t=90#p4058 )

- again, dozens of Silent Running samples, but also some new weird ones from Guyver, and The Lawnmower Man.

lots of fixes, and a concerning number of unknown pieces! (well, most of them are environments and mixed field recordings, but still, lots of unknown tracks, some of them so familiar that it's KILLING ME...)

new finds:

UVX - Elevator (13 Floor Spectrum)
KMFDM - We Must Awaken [Snippet]
69 - If Mojo Was A.M. - Carl Craig alias

And the FINAL flashback on the Kiss series, the Kiss T6 mix ( http://www.ilovecubus.co.uk/fsolboard/v ... 4063#p4063 )

- tons of Apocalypse Now / The Lawnmower Man / Silent Running / The Last of the Mohicans / Guyver / 2001: A Space Odyysey / you-name-it :)

new finds:
UVX - Elevator (13 Floor Spectrum) [Snippet]
Buckner & Garcia - The Defender [Snippet] - some Pac-Man sounds!!
Delia Derbyshire & Barry Bermange - Dreams (Colours)
Trancesetters - Fantasizing
Klaus Schulze - Ancient Ambience (Gothic Ground)
Teste - The Wipe (Sonik Dub) [played at 33rpm] -- again, awesome awesome track!

--- and some food for thought:
The Future Sound of London - Space Hippy - (unreleased)
- Another unreleased piece, from the answerphones sessions...
- If the vocals are just sliced samples form the answerphone machine, and the background seems sampled from The Irresistible Force - Flying High, then technically this track doesn't exist (hence, it's still unreleased) - or does it..?

--- more food for thought:
- "We're being cut off. The main frame will be totally isolated... in less than two minutes. Off the net." - (from The Lawnmower Man, 1992)
- The Future Sound of London - Off The Net - (unreleased) - so this one probably also doesn't exist as a track... Maybe they named it because they forgot where the sample was taken from, or they planned to develop an environment around it...
