Jerome's mullet emerging through the dry ice haunts me to this day...

I really liked Dream Mixes 4, though that was essentially a Jerome Froese effort. From memory, the ones I liked since about 97 onwards are the strangely trancey Trans Siberian Express, Great Wall of China, Jean D'Arc, Summer in Nagasaki, and to a lesser extent the first two Sonic Poem albums.

I've not tried any new things from them for the last 3 years or so I think, but I'm vaguely intrigued by their recent decision to go all electronic/electric again and, crucially, Ulrich Schnauss joining the band.

It says it there on his facebook page and he seems to make a big deal out of it too. Who knows it may be just a one off, but it lists him as a band member for a concert in November rather than just a special guest. He's got strong links to Jerome Froese and has always said he's a big fan. Very odd.

Just recently listened to Schnauss´ latest album "A Long Way To Fall" from 2012. I like his sound, though the ca. one thousand layers of sound that are going on on each track give you sometimes the feeling of mountains of candyfloss getting stuffed into your ear :) . But on "Long Way" he is more focused with a bit of a darker edge on some tracks. Absolutely love this one.
If new TD-material should sound a bit like that, I would definitely lend an ear.

I'm most familiar with "A Strangely Isolated Place" which is a lovely and woozy record. I've heard Goodbye as well but that sounded like it had some kind of mastering problems on it, it sounded like it was recorded underwater - the top end of the frequency spectrum was almost entirely missing.

He has overproduced stuff in the past but it could be an interesting collaboration. What they have been guilty of in the past is a lack of cohesion. You could usually spot what had been done by Jerome or Thorsten as being the more lively numbers Edgar's as being the generic and largely forgettable tracks on the whole. I think it's been too easy for Edgar to churn out tons of crap seemingly without putting any effort in, or indeed using any tangible quality control.

The great sadness of this is when you compare it with his early solo output, which was daring and ground breaking. It's quite telling that Brian and Gaz clearly sampled stuff off Aqua on Lifeforms, and yet now much of his output is, well, anonymous.

Edgar is a victim of his own success - he can put almost anything out, and as long as it's competent people are going to buy it. It really is odd when you get tracks like the first one on this:

which is one of Thorsten's and it's so utterly out of place. Very strange. I wonder if Ulrich Schnauss will simply supply some solo tracks in a similar way.

I have the deluxe version of Orchid with the second disc. It has been too long since I listened to that album.. Should give it a spin soon. There's some deep stuff on disc two.

Super Furry Animals: Guerilla
Super Furry Animals: Rings around the world
Super Furry Animals: Phantom Power
Super Furry Animals: Lovekraft
Super Furry Animals: Hey Venus

I just love this band. The bandwidth of musical styles incorporated in their music is simply breathtaking. Every record of theirs is jolly fun, I know no other band (except XTC maybe) that is able to conjure a smile on my face at every listen. Also at times very funny lyrics, there´s obviously a strong lysergic influence in there...
