I still don't get why it was renamed. Probably the most awaited song on the archives though, fifteen years later...

Pande-reviews: 1997.4 (FSOL - A MPB Mix Vol.1, Kiss FM)

Post by Pandemonium »

FSOL - A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble Exploding in Your Mind Vol.1
(Kiss FM Manchester) [radio mix] (Aug.1997)

- bootleg / first official release 15.11.2008, currently unavailable

Image Image

OK guys, I'm feeling exhausted and proud right about now, posting this... Get ready for a long journey (while listening and reading) and the MPB Vol.1 explained in details and tons of background information. I discovered 4 or 5 of the unknown tracks and discovered about 4-5 more that weren't listed too! Also, cracked almost all of the poems, monologues, dialogues and movie samples used in this one. So what remains unknown is a small number of tracks, most of them snippets with too much mixing effects - so they're pretty much unrecognizable, until they aren't...

This is one MAD MAD Trippp, psychedelic gems, progressive rock, funky beats, orchestral soundtracks and electronic music all around. Dozens of samples from movies, spoken word poems and monologues. All beautifully crafted and woven by FSOL and their huge banks of FX units.

About the transmission date, until recently, I thought it was June or July (1997), but after the new discovery of the French bootleg in June and the fact that Triple Cause Of Poetry hit the market on 28th of July 1997 and is present in this mix - I'd say that this mix was transmitted in August.

Part 1:

00:00 Transmission Intro

00:00 -- Freeman Lowell - "I suggest that you reach deep down inside yourself... and try and find something to keep you awake a little longer... because this transmission coming up may just rekindle your will to live." - (from Silent Running, 1972)
- Bruce Dern as Freeman Lowell in the legendary sci-fi movie Silent Running ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067756/ )

00:11 -- Garry Cobain - "A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble..." repetitive intro for the transmission.

00:47 -- Deepak Chopra - "Monologue about mind/body/soul/ego" - (unknown book source)
- Digging this monologue to the bone! I must've listen to it a hundred times... and I'm still impressed by it.

01:51 Ananda Shankar - Streets of Calcutta - (His Master's Voice, 1975)
- In the late 1960s Ananda Shankar traveled to Los Angeles, where he played with many contemporary musicians including Jimi Hendrix. There he released his first self-titled album in 1970, featuring original Indian classical material alongside sitar-based cover versions of popular hits such as The Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and The Doors' "Light My Fire". Returning to India in the early 1970s Shankar continued to experiment musically and in 1975 released his most critically acclaimed album, Ananda Shankar And His Music, a jazz-funk mix of Eastern sitar, Western rock guitar, tabla and mridangam, drums and Moog synthesizers.

- Entranced by a copy of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, which he had purloined from his girlfriend, Bo Hansson moved into a friend's vacant apartment and started writing. When the unfortunate friend returned, he found that he had been evicted from his apartment after numerous complaints about the noise Hansson was creating. Hansson retreated to a remote cottage on an island off Stockholm where he, drummer Rune Carlsson and engineer Anders Lind, who had worked previously with Hansson & Karlsson, spent the winter of 1969 recording what was to become Hansson's debut solo album on a borrowed four track recorder. The resourceful Lind was even able to gain use of the only eight track recorder in Sweden at that time at the Swedish National Radio station, on the pretext that he was interested in buying one himself and wanted to test it. Once there, he persuaded session musicians Gunnar Bergsten and Sten Bergman to flesh out the recordings.

Haven't listened to that mix yet, but it's nice to see Sun Dial featured in there :)

The indian guy speaking at the beginning and in the middle must be the aryuvedic physician Deeprak Chopra, as he was mentioned to appear in the mix by that review printed in the inlay of MPB2. He wrote (and still writes) a hell lot of books about the connection of eastern spirituality and western science. Quite interesting.

One of the best things the guys ever did. Just astonishing.

Snoring at the end sampled from the first White Noise album - My Game Of Loving, same as the end of Vit.

The Sun Dial track/title crossover - definitely. When Gaz announces the title in that slightly silly voice, if you listen closely he actually says "A monstrous psychedelic bubble, colours exploding in your mind".

Well, "must be" is a serious claim...
I googled bits and pieces of that speech and can't quite place Deepak Chopra,
I even read most of this famous quotes...

If you can find from which book was the one from the mix, please share :)

@Pande: It's definitely not Osho, he can be heard on various EBS mixes, e.g. that "Happiness is unbelievable" Quote from EBS 1.

I'm not 100% sure, but as I said, in the booklet of MPB2 "Pagan Love Vibrations" is a review of the 97' Kiss FM Show that mentions Mr. Chopra to appear in it. No idea from where the audio is sourced.

Edit:
In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna says: 'Curving back within myself, I create again and again and again.' Not a metaphor of poetry, a fact of physics, of science.

Well, the "Curving back..." quote is from the Bhagavad Gita book, it's not a Deepak quote...

It is very possible that these monologues are bits and pieces from some recording where Deepak reads parts from that book - which as I understand is something like an Indian bible (bad analogy I know, but it's so we can understand each-other here).

- So I'll accept that it's his voice, but "Curving back..." is a very small quote from the beginning of Part 2 of the mix,
I'd like to know where does he read from in Part 1, the longer part.
