Not exactly, we don't use bacon much here,
instead we have (with some surrounding neighbor countries) perfected burger pork meat - well, its not a burger, but its the closest description.

It's 70% pork, 20% beef, and 10% a mix of onions, bread crumbs, eggs, special mix of salt and a few other secret ingredients :)

This is PLESKAVICA:
Image

This is LOVECHKA PLESKAVICA (loose translation: hunter's burger) - it usually has pieces of yellow cheese in it, with chopped pieces of bacon or other kinds of meat.
Image

and these are KEBAPs (kebapche)
Image

of course, the grilled bread is another specialty...

But lets not dwell, I need to review FSOL releases :) and now I'm hungry :)

Pande-reviews: 1996.3 (FSOL - ISDN Shows '96 Part 1)

Post by Pandemonium »

FSOL - BBC Radio 1 Steve Lamacq Session [live mix] (26.10.1996) bootleg / unreleased

Image

Dead Cities was still in promo mode when this was recorded. FSOL promoted Dead Cities via ISDN shows in the new ISDN tour called "Fuck Rock'n'Roll" and they did more than 30 shows (60+ is you count that they mostly did two shows per night) in the next 2-and-a-half months. I will review 10 or so of these, 4 of wich were/are official releases of The Pod Room at fsoldigital.com.
So, let's begin with the half hour slot on Steve Lamacq's show. All tracks are from the Dead Cities album.

00:00 Intro and interview
- Joining them live in the studio, Steve is amazed from FSOL from the very start, a tour without leaving the studio.

03:22 We Have Explosive (Herd Killing)
- very clear (as in clear not-dirty sound) version. You can actually hear the Run-DMC samples very clearly here.

07:15 My Kingdom
- this mix starts pretty standard and in the moment when you think they just played an album track, the multi-track gets smashed into pieces, some new effects kick in, the scratch slowing down and everything. Every (well, almost) version of My Kingdom is unique and awesome. Even new vocals/ramblings at the end.

12:48 Hallucination (Yage demo)
- Another Hallucination/Yage version. I just don't know which version is what anymore, but the sound is excellent. The flutes are just brilliant and denser here. And the guitar distortion... no words for that one...

19:32 Max
- I got no comment here, just listened to it and enjoyed. Seemed longer than the album version.

22:29 Quagmire
- After a while the tempo is faster than the album version. Crazy track, loving it more every day...

26:54 Glass
- Hmm... not much to say again, except that, maybe, Glass is my least favorite track from Dead Cities. It's not a bad track at all, but it seems like all the other tracks are a little better.

32:48 Outro and interview
- A few more questions from Steve, mention of Simon Wells, who obviously Steve knew through Snuff...

35:10 End

FSOL - ISDN Transmission 3, Edinburgh (Forth FM) [live mix] (28.10.1996)
- bootleg / first official release 01.02.2010

Image

At the very last and official promoting day for Dead Cities, FSOL made an hour long ISDN transmission to Forth FM, Edinburgh.
This transmission is full of unreleased (at the time) tracks from the Dead Cities sessions who will appear 10-15 years later on the Archives and Environment series.

1. ISDN LIVE Transmission - Forth FM 28/10/96 [62:11]

00:00 Transmission Intro
00:43 We Have Explosive Part 4 - (from We Have Explosive, 1997)
- We Have Explosive and all of it's variations are just NEVER boring to me.

04:30 Accompaniment for Melodious Expression - (from Environments 3, 2010)
- This is actually the first time ever we hear this track. It's a b-side from the Dead Cities sessions that was never released, until Environments 3 in 2010. The saxophone parts sound like Richard Thomas... same session with Max maybe...

08:20 Oil - Psycho Crab - (from the Slight of Hand EP, 1997)
- Leon Mar was already signed up on EBV (electronic brain violence) records (owned by FSOL), so they borrowed his track for this mix. The Slight of Hand EP by Oil will come out the next year. Some great breaks with effects here.

12:40 Slow Of Motion - (from the Archives Vol.2, 2007)
- Another premiere of unreleased Dead Cities tracks here. This short gem will find it's way into Archives Vol.2 in 2007.

13:26 Antique Toy - (from Dead Cities, 1996)
- Again, some new effects in the background, just enough to make it different from the album version.

18:20 Dark Matter - (from the Archives Vol.2, 2007)
- An interesting beat piece that will appear on the Archives 2. Reminds me a little of the ISDN album...

22:21 Her Face Forms in Summertime - (from Dead Cities, 1996)
- The bass line is played differently here, sounding like a demo version or something... or maybe this was the original bass-line that they picked up from somewhere... still a very beautiful version.

27:17 Yashica - (from the Archives Vol.5, 2008)
- Unreleased b-side that emerged on Archives 5. Obviously some kind of a variation of Quagmire, and probably made in the same session with Antique Toy and Glass. Intense...

32:29 Oil - Slight of Hand - (from the Slight of Hand EP, 1997)
- the title track of the Slight of Hand EP - brilliant trip-hop / breaks track. The bassline - also pure gold.

36:02 Swarm - (from the Archives Vol.6, 2010)
- Unreleased leftover no.5 from the Dead Cities sessions. Interesting piece that feels unfinished but has a lot of potential to become a brilliant track. I feel like there were a hundred tracks were made in the Dead Cities sessions.

39:18 Environments - Birds - (from the Archives Vol.1, 2007)

39:36 ?????
- And we come to the unknown piece, an interesting tribal / percussion track with some cool environments. Feels like an older Lifeforms sessions piece.

41:33 My Kingdom - (from Dead Cities, 1996)
- Say no more - the part at 43:13 freezes my brain every time.

46:35 Kaaawa (unreleased)
- contains vocal sample from Little Star by Stina Nordenstam - (Telegram Records Stockholm, 1994)
- Little Star by Stina Nordenstam - hear it here: (

47:16 ?????
- Unknown piece number 2, is that Garry trying to sing at 47:42?? (hmm... maybe it's a sample...) Very pleasant piece otherwise. The last 60-70 seconds go into beats and horns. Maybe from the same session with My Kingdom...

50:22 Max - (from Dead Cities, 1996)
- Calms me down every time. Better than meditation. Every fucking time...

53:19 Mains Interrupt - (from the Archives Vol.2, 2007)
- A short piece building up to the Explosives.

54:12 We Have Explosive - (from Dead Cities, 1996)
- Dooom daaaa doo-dooom-doo-dooom daaa - and so on :)

59:35 Mains Interrupt - (from the Archives Vol.2, 2007)
- And it also ends the Explosives, and the transmission :)

1:02:12 Transmission End

Ah yes, that version of My Kingdom is lovely, a nice halfway point between the album and single versions.
Will have to have a listen to these shows again, as I've never noticed any differences between the album versions and the live ones.

Pande-reviews: 1996.4 (FSOL - ISDN Shows '96 Part 2)

Post by Pandemonium »

FSOL - BBC Radio Leicester [live mix] (01.11.1996) bootleg / unreleased

Image

Ross quote:
Second broadcast of the night on 1st November to Radio Leicester (not as sometimes referred to on bootlegs, Radio 3).
There is some radio interference which annoyingly appears just as the interview ends and the music starts.

Part one:
00:00 Intro and interview

02:24 Tingler '96 - (from the ISDN Show promo, 1997)
- Lots of Predator samples, dark environments, this is a leftover from the same Dead Cities session with Antique Toy, or it is even possible to go as back as Liquid Insects in 1992/93. I like this track a Lot. Also, probably a premiere appearance of this track. It will later appear in a slightly different mix on Archives Vol.7 (2012) as War Machines.

06:31 Accompaniment for Melodious Expression - (from Environments 3, 2010)
- The saxophone parts sound like Richard Thomas... same session with Max maybe... the track continues into the next part of the session. Why was this cut-up this way...?

08:30 End

Part two:
00:00 Accompaniment for Melodious Expression - (continues from the previous part)

02:20 Yage (Oil Mix) - (from Teachings From The Electronic Brain VHS, 1996)
- This cool breaks version of Yage is actually still unreleased on official audio carrier. The only place where we can hear it is the VHS promo tape of Teachings From The Electronic Brain. A very cool/enjoyable version indeed.

06:54 My Kingdom - (from Dead Cities, 1996)
- Very similar version to the 'ISDN3 Edinburgh' one, but still, a little different every time, like that time-lapse moment at 8:34 - here it has bassline in the back and some additional effects.

09:02 End

Part three:
00:00 My Kingdom - (continues from the previous part)

03:22 We Have Explosive (Herd Killing) - (from Semtex - We Have Explosive 12", 1996)
- The rare and crazy version from the Semtex 12" promo.

09:02 End

Part four:
00:00 Oil - Slight of Hand - (from the Slight of Hand EP, 1997)
- the title track of the Slight of Hand EP, my head always starts shaking when I even think of this beat... and that bassline...

05:31 Outro and interview
- "We feel like we've just had half an hour of meditation" :) - damn right...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FSOL - BBC Radio Aire Leeds [live mix] (02.11.1996) bootleg / unreleased

Image

The second transmission of 2nd November, to Radio Aire.

00:00 Transmission intro

00:47 ?????
- The same pleasant unknown piece that appears on 'ISDN3 Edinburgh' at 47:16, still wondering if this is Garry singing...

02:57 Oil - Psycho Crab - (from the Slight of Hand EP, 1997)
- I just love Leon Mar's sense of rhythm structure...

05:16 Slow of Motion - (from the Archives Vol.2, 2007)
- This short gem will find it's way into Archives Vol.2 in 2007.

05:56 We Have Explosive / Accompaniment for Melodious Expression Environment - (from Dead Cities, 1996 / from Environments 3, 2010)
- The environmental part from WHE and the guitar part from Accompaniment... wonderful...

07:10 My Kingdom - (from Dead Cities, 1996)
- This is the same transmission as the Leicester one, only the sound-quality is better here.

11:37 Tingler '96 - (from the ISDN Show promo, 1997)
- I really wish this would've ended up on the Dead Cities album... it just fits so well...

16:03 Her Face Forms in Summertime - (from Dead Cities, 1996)
- Same version as 'ISDN3 Edinburgh', sounds like a demo version of the bass, or maybe the original bassline sampled.

20:03 We Have Explosive (Herd Killing) - (from Semtex - We Have Explosive 12", 1996)
- Same as Leicester version, only shorter.

23:40 Dead Cities - (from Dead Cities, 1996)
- Just a short snippet used to connect to Glass.

24:35 Glass - (from Dead Cities, 1996)
- Not much to say again... As I listen to it more and more often, I realize that most of the days I really don't like the opening of this track. It gets better after the rhythm kicks in...

30:54 End

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FSOL - ISDN Transmission 6, France (Fun Radio) [live mix] (05.11.1996)
- bootleg / first official release 07.03.2010

Image

There were two France Fun Radio ISDN shows released on the Pod Room in 2010, and both of them were marked with incorrect dates. This one (the first one) marked as 17.05.1997 is probably transmitted on 05.11.1996. This is suggested by the tracklists and the numbering of this session as ISDN 6. The second one, also marked 17.05.1997 is probably transmitted on 27.02.1997, but we'll talk about that one later.

By now I've shared my thoughts on every one of the following tracks, probably more than once, so now I'll just leave the (slightly fixed) tracklist without my boring comments :)

1. ISDN Live Transmission - France - Fun Radio - 17/05/97 [30:13]

00:00 Transmission intro

00:52 We Have Explosive Part 4 - (from We Have Explosive, 1997)

05:00 Slow Of Motion - (from the Archives Vol.2, 2007)

05:35 Accompaniment For Melodious Expression - (from Environments 3, 2010)

06:48 My Kingdom - (from Dead Cities, 1996)

11:15 We Have Explosive Part 2 - (from We Have Explosive, 1997)

14:10 Max - (from Dead Cities, 1996)

17:45 Tingler '96 - (from the ISDN Show promo, 1997)

22:04 Her Face Forms In Summertime - (from Dead Cities, 1996)

27:20 Everyone In The World - (from the ISDN Show promo, 1997)
- actually a very different track from 'Everyone In The World Is Doing Something Without Me'

29:23 ????? - an unknown trumpet piece used for outro (or it is a part of Everyone In The World) - reminds me of Miles Davis, I'll find the title some day too...

30:13 Transmission ends

FSOL - Fun Radio (this is the original radio transmission, not the pod room release)

Nice. I'll try and track that down. I looked through your other "Transmissions" reviews - looks like there are still quite a few tracks from those that haven't been used on the Archives yet. I wonder how many more Archive albums we might get? :)

It's probably my favourite collection of tracks they've done - It's like an upgraded version of Dead Cities (though my mind always fluctuates between which I love best: this '97 set or the original album)

Hmm... they are pretty different, but I wouldn't say two different tracks.
They have the same elements / vocal patterns ...
the Live version with the shorter name on the ISDN Show 1997 promo has the same trumpet sample that I'm pretty sure it's Miles Davis...

I managed to listen to Womb and Womb 2. Womb seemed to be an alternate mix of My Kingdom and Womb 2 also had strong similarities to a Dead Cities track, but I can't quite place which one off the top of my head.

I'm guessing this is extremely rare now, going by the prices of the two for sale on discogs.com?
