So who knew about this one? A newly created version of Mountain Goat for the Café Del Mar 35th Anniversary compilation.

The sample sections are obviously a fairly faithful recreation, but once it goes all synthy in the middle the sounds are noticeably different. It's a completists-only track, but still - something new.
And just after I completed making my 'compilation tracks' CDr as well.
Mountain Goat 2014
Re: Mountain Goat 2014
Has the track been edited by FSOL or has someone doing the compilation edited it? It's such a subtle difference from the original.
Re: Mountain Goat 2014
FSOL did it. Basically went back to the original multi-tracks and did a new take, hence the structure being very similar but there being a handful of differences - the drum loop cuts out quite abruptly, and the synth presets being different.
Re: Mountain Goat 2014
Cool to know it’s an official tweak by them. As you can see in the waveforms it is pretty much the same structure as the original. The guitar has a much shorter and softer fade-in as the intro is mostly focused on that soft slow pulsing (almost breathing) sound. Much more is made of this throughout the track as well as the synth over the top. The clanking sound starts much later on (1:50 in the original and 2:30 in the newer version). In the last section of the original, the track comes down for a moment to almost just the guitar (at 4:00) then comes back up again. This isn’t in the newer version. The end more or less just cuts back down almost abrubtly to the breathing pulse with some faint sounds of the end of the original (chimes, running water).
Subtle differences but overall the newer version does has a softer feel to it, which fits in with the Cafe Del Mar beach chillout sound.

Nice image - shows they were definitely working from the same MIDI files when it was put together then. Incredible to think they've kept every bit of data like this, 21 years after it was first release. I've lost sessions files from tracks I did last year
Re: Mountain Goat 2014
They must have become very disciplined. Considering the amount of samples they used to pull together.
