Ah, the art of mixing... a lifelong journey.

I've never had the chance to try actual analog desk, but I'm now using the recent emulations by Nebula (that use completely non-linear algos, different from any VST plugins), very expensive pro desks, like API, SSL and Neve, and I have to say: I absolutely love the Neve sound. SSL sounds like pop, API sounds pretty 80's and ruff. The Neve (5088 in this case, which as actually a "smaller" desk, still 50,000+$) has some real elegance and is really balanced IMO.

The "3D"ism comes from transformers, tubes, tapes etc.

My current mixdown chain:

Neve 5088 ->
Doc Fear tube EQ (changes the sound even if I don't do anything) ->
A certain Vari-MU tube compressor (just for the vibe, no compression) ->
Neve Portico 5042 tape ->
SSL 4K compressor (slight compression)

On the actual projects I usually use different (Nebula) preamps, tapes and compressors on each channel/group. Fairly CPU heavy. This also adds some nice depth to the mix.

I rarely need any EQuing after this.. but I'd say, if you got the money: carry your mixes to a professional mastering engineer. No plugins can ever sound as good as his 500k gear.

Ozone 5 has a nice eq widener (band specific)
also Sonalksis has a widener that's nice for the opposite for lo bass freq, so the higher ones have more space and headroom

I've done a bunch of music, but I can't really complete them since I'm running such a crappy computer, the plugins & synths are fairly CPU heavy. Currently saving for a proper i7 setup and audio interface.. doesn't come cheap.

->Herd, i really recommend trying some quality console emulation. The Neve 5088 emu I'm using works wonders, when gain staged right.

You'll have to invest massive 29€ to get the Nebula, or 139€ to get the Pro version which I recommend, new engine, better CPU usage. It's a PITA to learn to use and takes a few days to authorize, but you'll get a hold of some really, really rare & high end gear which you couldn't find IRL, or not to mention afford.

I can't recommend this highly enough.

I discovered Herd‘s sound only last year, when he released another installment in his Tangents series on Future Sound of London‘s own label, fsoldigital. I’ll be honest, being a huge fan of everything FSOL since the early 90s, I was immediately blown away! I still play Lifeforms every time I need to enter a world of experimental downtempo and leftfield psychedelia. It’s one of my all time favorite albums! And now I added Herd to that list. Jason Thomson takes the perfected dark ambient formula and makes it even better! For this exclusive Headphone Commute mix, Thomson pays a tribute to the beloved sound:

This mix is a nod to the legendary 3D Headspace/ISDN transmissions which were broadcast by The Future Sound of London in the mid to late 1990s. These soundscapes as well as the Radio One Essential mixes were what inspired me to begin making music many years later. The tracklist contains exclusive Herd material alongside FSOLdigital label mate Seafar as well as a healthy dose of FSOL themselves. Alongside are other artists whose tracks in some way reflect “the interplay of light and dark” for which FSOL became famous for.

I am honored to host this beautiful journey and am pretty sure that it will remain on my rotations for many years to come. I hope you feel the same! Please enjoy responsibly…

The one thing that surprised me is how short it was for so many tracks. It's all incredibly densely mixed. My musical taste of late is slightly on the lighter end of things, so it was pretty heavy going in places - as I expected (even if I wasn't familiar with your stuff, opening with WHE Part 5 is a pretty good signifier!). But yeah, nicely put together, this one, it's saved and due for a listen when I fancy going this deep again.
