Tell me, where does the 'tangents' concept come from?

I suppose I wanted to make a group of tracks which all sounded like they were from the same artist but all developed organically without no set idea on what I planned to make - each track going off on a tangent I suppose.I still work like that now.Apart from maybe the Terminal Window track I usually just start throwing bits together and see what develops over time. There has been discussions with a mate of mine about possibly wrapping Tangents up at number 50.Im still not sure - sometimes it sounds like a good idea sometimes it dont. Also I saw this and thought it sounded good - but I honestly cant remember if I saw this before I started my Tangents or after:

Yeah, that makes sense. I can't comprehend how you make your tracks so free in structure at all. Probably because I did a few years in shitty dance music before I started on decent stuff and I just can't shake off the shackles.

Probably because Ive had no training of any type and I dont know any music theory etc.I throw samples together until it sounds good in my head! it seems to work most of the time!

Ah no, you've got a knack for creating stuff that seems to ebb and flow, though. No formal training doesn't stop your mind from being trained - by the music you listen to, by the software you use. I'm just constantly amazed that your music isn't noticeably loop-based yet it doesn't have the freeform improv of drone and wanky synth music. I don't understand it at all, but I like that.

Dare I ask - what software do you use? I know it's rude to ask. ;)

I started off with Sony Acid then moved onto Ableton Live.Ive been experimenting with Cinema 4d (the program I make those 3d pictures with) as its possible in there to insert sounds and have them move around and record the sound. If that makes sense - sort of animating sounds.

Aha. Interestingly I did our side of Combiner in Live as well. Cinema 4D sounds like an interesting way to go - sounds like you could create something pretty original from it if you master it anyway.
Oh God 25 posts already. I need to close the computer down and go to bed.

088 /

Up this week I’ve great pleasure in presenting Herd. An artist with a supreme ability for the deep sublime soundscape.

the SHOWCASE

Continuing in a similar vein to his Duck Eye Calm mix Herd returns with another 30 minute soundscape containing more of his ongoing Tangents series, which currently sits at close to 50 tracks.

This journey began on TheMixingbowl where productions pre Herd were uploaded for the members to offer feedback. This feedback helped develop the Herd sound and releases on netlabels FSOR (USA), Bumpfoot (Japan) and Entity (Belgium) followed. Radio exposure in the early days included the legendary Mary Anne Hobbs show for Radio One:

‘Deeply mysterious – this one’s for all the Murcof fans’ - Mary Anne Hobbs

as well as Rob Booth’s Electronic Explorations sixth show. This support waned in the following year leaving Herd time to refine his sound. Fast forward another year and Herd flippantly sends a demo link to The Future Sound of London’s Brian Dougans and is pleasantly surprised to receive a very short but positive reply. Nine frustrating months later – not long in FSOL time – and Tangents 41 – 47 is released on the Future Sound of Londons online label FSOLdigital.

‘Nothing more than an amazing (and very welcome) flashback to my favorite world of FSOL’ – Headphone Commute

Prepare for a beautiful journey into the world of Herd.
