The inappropriate nature of that cover never fails to amuse me. But yeah, great collection of albums.

I need to explore Popul Vuh properly beyond the first two albums. I've heard a few tracks and I like a lot, and don't like a bit.

Meantime, I just noticed that the first compilation on L.I.E.S. - American Noise Volume 1 - is on Soundcloud, well worth a listen to both discs:

well i would venture to guess your reception of Popol Vuh Ross but I've already been bitten by those type assumptions too many times in the past with you :P

they surely have had their own vibe and uniqueness to their sound over the years
cross between kraut/indian raga/psychedelia maybe

i'm just wrapping up my journey with them and it was a great ride

and surely less daunting than the full Klaus Schulze trip :D

The thing about Popol Vuh is how varied their / his discography is. Some of it's electronic drone, some more fully fledged krautrock, some more on the modern classical end, some I've heard is very spiritual chant stuff... lots of really beautiful sounds and melodies in there though, which is most important to me. Definitely on my list of artists to work my way through, along with Namlook (although, realistically, I'm not going to complete that trip!)

ha! namlook i'm working on right now. got a couple i'm juggling....namlook, steve roach, and naturally still working through TD (currently up to Kyoto)

my overall impression of PV after hearing 95% of their catalog is that it leans in the spiritual chant/indian raga type direction more than anything else. add to that some psychedelic drone and that's a pretty close representation. the album i linked above was one of their last so it's got a more modern sound and beat to it.

Yeah... it gets a bit more 'rocky' in the mid/late '70s, and Hosiana Mantra is as much modern classical as anything... and yes, the slightly dancey '90s stuff which I wasn't so fond of.

Namlook and the Fax catalogue is just too much for me to ever consider working through thoroughly. There are some I'm not interested in (the Namlook I-XXVII series are mostly live experiments that I've had a quick browse through to little interest; the early trance stuff), and some I've got on my CD wishlist (the Air and Silence albums, 62 Eulengasse with Tetsu Inoue). The rest I think I'm going to just pick at occasionally, see if anything interesting turns up. Terrible, terrible puns aside, I'm quite interested in delving deeper into the Dark Side of the Moog series.
