Non-electronic favourites:
Idlewild
Wire
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Pink Floyd
Blur
The Divine Comedy
Lightning Seeds
Tears for Fears
Warpaint
Suede
Cocteau Twins
Talk Talk
The Cure
A Silver Mt Zion
XTC
Caravan
Current 93
Lots of stuff from the '67/'68 psych era - Traffic, Pretty Things, Family

Also listen to a fair bit of classical stuff and always finding stuff I like in the world of 'pop' - lately Chvrches, Kimbra, Nicola Roberts

That T? box looks pretty cool. Last album I bought was One Cure Fits All, but I did give Crooked Timber a listen and thought it was great.

Yeah, Crooked Timber was great. Their last one, A Brief Crack of Light was really cool too. Only one I wasn't totally keen on was Never Apologise, Never Explain.

The Cure are one of my favourites too, how could I forget them! Still waiting for the Wish re-issue and for them to release the album worth of stuff they didn't release from the 4:13 Dream sessions...

I'm still hoping I'll "catch up" one day, not have a pile of unplayed CDs and then I can get back to listening to what I want, when I want. I think I've been saying that for about 4 years now though.
Yeah, alongside getting rid of lots of my music, I also slashed my wishlist from about 400 to something like 20. Even if I hear all the music I want to, I'm never going to have chance to listen to it in the way I'd like. So I'm happier enjoying the things I have and love rather than worrying about stuff I've not discovered.

I try my best these days to not get into anything new. Or at least I try not to get into new old bands, if you see what I mean. Not so bad if it's a new band with only one or two albums, but I really don't have time for getting into a band that has 30 years of stuff for me to catch up on. Not sure I'm doing very well at it though, but I try.

I met them when they played in Leeds on the NANE tour. Stole a bottle of milk from their tourbus. Such were student days.

When it comes to The Cure, my favourite stuff is the early goth era - Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography. Wonderfully.bleak set of albums there.

I think the only artists in my wishlist who I don't own records by are The Soft Machine and A Winged Victory for the Sullen. The rest is tried and tested artists I need more albums by.

See, I know I have a problem, because I haven't heard of either of those artists and now I really have an urge to go and check them out...

I was a student for 9 years (instead of 5) so I listened music non-stop then.
Now I think that a long period (20 something years) is coming when I won't be to make more than 2 hours a day for music (mostly in the car going to work, and late at night before I go to bed)...

But now I think I'll just clump albums up in some kind of storage and they will wait for better days, retirement maybe :)
You're doin' too much, do less.

Yeah, working really gets in the way of listening to music!

Make a long list of stuff to check out and then try one or two artists a month. If you're doing it slowly you'll have less time for ok/average music, I find.

Yeah, that's not a bad idea.

I do try and keep my standards high, so if something sounds good and maybe as good as other stuff that I already listen to, I don't necessarily bother with it. I only usually look further if it's GREAT or good enough and also quite different to anything else I already have. Course, when I came across FSOL, that was both great AND different :)

Yes, that difference is always an important thing. I never see the point in listening to lots of similar artists - I also get bored quite quickly. There are absolutely no areas/genres/etc. of music that I have more than a few records in.
This makes fitting into any sort of crowd (real life/online) fucking impossible.

The only crowd I find myself fitting in is the crowd of people who don't fit in any sort of crowd.

There's a lot to be said for being yourself, of course. I'm happy to have my own perspective and taste based entirely on my own experiences. But God, the amount of musical discussions where I've never heard 99% of the artists mentioned... I'd love to be an active member of forums like Fangs and Arrows, the Type Records.board etc. - but I just don't have time for getting into certain genres/scenes to the level of these people.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Although I do like quite a number of similar-ish punk or metal bands, for the most part, with any given person, I will almost certainly like at least one band/artist that they like, but rarely will we share interest in a large number.

So inevitably, even if you happen to mention some music that they do like and talk about that for a while, when you then get on to "so, what else do you listen to?" the common ground soon crumbles away :P
