Ai - Paradigmension [album: 23rd June 2017]

PostWed May 17, 2017 10:28 pm

Image

artist: Ai (stands for Audio intelligence)

album: Paradigmension

release date: will drop digitally on June 23 via Blurred Recordings ( https://www.blurredrecordings.com/ )

people on this project: Robin Appleton, Will White, Brian Dougans, Garry Cobain
(essentially the same gang from the Research remix album library music that Ross dug out recently)

The brainchild of Robin Appleton — founder of underground cult psych/prog band Cranium Pie and Tronsonic, unique tape-sampled virtual synthesizers — Ai (standing for Audio intelligence) is a collective of friends and collaborators, including Will White of Propellerheads, who contributed ideas and new mixes to Paradigmension, a 17-track album of electronic soul. The hard-to-define release was originally conceived as a soundtrack project for TV and film and was built around Appleton's home-made Tronsonic samples.

Ahead of the release, you can download 1 track, the LP cut of "So High - I Can Reach The Sun" here:
https://www.xlr8r.com/mp3/2017/05/ai-so ... h-the-sun/

PS - the track sounds great, and you can see Cobain/Dougans credited in the tags of the file.

PPS - the cover of the release is done by the same guy who did Leftism (for Leftfield) [probably this guy then: https://www.discogs.com/artist/1846140-Jonathon-Cooke ] - can't say I like the cover though... looks like one of those pretentious modern pieces of random unfinished stuff... the two 'stones' do remind me of the PNG head a little :)

Good stuff, dubby analogue synth jams with a variety of beats skittering in and out of the tracks, a series of short and sweet sketches. Very chilled end of the night record for long Summer evenings.

The clips sound like they've been air dropped in from the early nineties, but that's not necessarily such a bad thing. I'll have to try and get hold of this when I can. The digital link, the blurred recordings site doesn't seem to contain an option to buy, just a link that plays a very short clip, but I see it is available elsewhere, Juno for example, or cheaper on TrackItDown.

Not overly impressed by the cover, though it does make me think strangely of Lynch's Eraserhead.
