Re: Pande-reviews: 2003.1 (FSOL - PNG d'n'b Remixes)

PostTue Jun 10, 2014 1:38 pm

- And Dennis is Right! :)

the piece on MPB4 at:
17:42 The Future Sound of London - Slowly Falling Backwards - (unreleased, to date)

is the same piece on EBS0,5 at:
53:53 The Future Sound of London - Slowly Falling Backwards - (unreleased, to date)

- but is this the said track? I don't know... that EBS0,5 tracklist looks far from finished... Ross? Thoughts? Anyone?
-- Ross, your tracks should be after it... but I think I hear some of them before 53:53...
-- Woodland ends around 47:20, and then we have the two unreleased tracks 'Electric Field' & 'Slowly Falling Backwards' until around 56:00, but I think there's more than just these two track in those 8,5 minutes, like environments, a spoken version of interview from the old days (I don't remember which one exactly, maybe Ross can help there also) then at least two unlisted tracks...

- but this is what I'm talking about people, this is why I do this thread, to make finds like this one :)
- I'm sure if more people LISTENED along we would have much more completed tracklists in no-time! :)

EDIT:
I really doubt a little the track in question is by FSOL... this might be another one of those cases like Kaaawa and/or 18 Degrees to The Left, that aren't actually FSOL pieces, but some heavily remixed pieces from some rare track/tracks that FSOL themselves forgot about and named the piece just to remember where it is for when they needed it for radio mixes...

EDIT 2:
Or maybe the 'Slowly Falling Backwards' track is the piece before 53:53 and after the spoken word interview...
You're doin' too much, do less.

Going to listen later. The 0.5 tracklist is definitely incomplete and gives me a headache every time I go to do it...

Pande-reviews: 2004.0 (AA - The Otherness)

PostThu Jun 12, 2014 1:57 pm

Amorphous Androgynous - The Otherness [B-sides & remixes] (05.01.2004)
Future Sound of London Recordings - FSOLCD105 / FSOLCD106 // fsoldigital.com - FSOLD006 //
Psychobaby Records - PBZ 54012

Image

After the initial success of the Isness, people knew there are a LOT of unreleased tracks from this album. So in 2004 a double disc was released naming the second disc: The Otherness - which is basically alternate takes, remixes and B-sides of The Isness. First there was a burgopack, limited to 4000 units, then in April a standalone The Otherness release on Psychobaby Records, and finally a standard double disc as FSOLCD106 in November 2005. Much later, probably the pressing was all sold out, there was a re-issue on FSOLDigital in 2012.

Truthfully, the real scope of the Isness sessions is much larger than we have here. The Isness sessions fed tracks to the next two albums, Alice in Ultraland and The Peppermint Tree, but we'll get to them... when we'll get to them :)

The tracklist should be written as the bold parts state, to avoid confusion, in my opinion :)

01. Elysian Feels (Abbey Road Version) [6:03]
- as heard on the Mispess / Abbey Road cut

02. The Mello Hippo Disco Show (Yo-Yo) (Abbey Road Version) [4:31]
- as heard on the Mispess / Abbey Road cut

03. Goodbye Sky (Abbey Road Version) [4:34]
- as heard on the Mispess / Abbey Road cut. On the print it is not mentioned that this is the Abbey Road Version proably because it is the only version.

04. The Lovers (Love Is The Lover) [7:02]
- something of a remix of the PNG Translations version. Strangely, the PNGT version is over 9 minutes and ends speaking the words 'Love Is The Lover', like the subtitle here, but here on The Otherness the speaking part is edited out.

05. Divinity (Maharishi Raga) [4:12]
- reinterpretation of Divinity. A lyricless version emphasizing the Indian instruments in the song.

06. Divinity (The Band) [6:02]
- reinterpretation of Divinity. A totally drooled out version... Like for weddings and similar events where you can nail something :) The singing is really really bad here, reminds me of kitsch & bad stuff...

07. Rural Green [3:43]
- Drums by Daniel Pemberton. The first of three exclusive compositions here. It sounds inspired (in a darker way) or at least played in the same session with Divinity. The outro sounds similar to the unreleased version of The Ram (aka Theram), also present on Listen Little Man (on the Peppermint Tree album).

08. Chawawah [4:03]
- the exclusive LP track got it's digital release here.

09. The Mello Hippo Disco Show (She Sells Electric Ego) [6:41]
- as heard on MHDS single.

10. Chinese Whispers [1:00]
- Sounds unfinished, and the name doesn't reflect the Indian instruments used here - otherwise, a cool piece.

11. The Mello Hippo Disco Show (Slo-Mo) (Edit) [3:16]]
- as heard on MHDS single, but here we have a shorter version.

12. Divinity (The Conga Run) [5:38]
- Stinky Rowe's version of Divinity, cracking the gutars and manipulating samples.

13. Theram [1:55]
- One of the earliest pieces (even before Isness concept was conceived). It was known as The Ram demo back in 1997, probably first played on one of the the French Fun Radio transmissions. The piano from the Guru Song can also be heard.

14. Divinity (Toy Piano) [1:03]
- A wonderful take on the Divinity theme on a toy piano by the one and only, Max Richter.

Toy Piano in Heinz Soup TV Advert "I Love Winter" - priceless piece of video :)

The beat on Chawawah (at 0:50 and onwards) samples the beat from Electric Light Orchestra - Don't Bring Me Down (album: Discovery, 1979)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Amorphous Androgynous - Divinity [promo single] (xx.01.2004)
Future Sound of London Recordings - FSOLCD108

Image

Originally planned to be an eight-part single, along the lines of Mello Hippo and Translations, the release was then changed to be a chart eligible three track single. One way or another, this was delayed so long that it was scrapped, with a small number of promo copies being sold through the Artful Records website. Tracks from the longform version ended up on The Otherness.

01. Divinity (Spector Mix) - a new version, with drums throughout, giving it a very radio-friendly feel.
02. Divinity (The Band Mix) - I really really really don't like this version at all!
03. Divinity (Album Edit)

And just because, let's have a relaxing 8 minutes with the original Divinity version :)

Love is the Lover is my favourite version of The Lovers - not a huge fan of the original, but I love how deep the second half of this gets, with the vocals and strings. Gorgeous outro section.

The Band is a 'live in studio' version of Divinity, from when they were rehearsing their live setup for the first time. I'm actually quite fond of it. The Spector mix is my favourite, though. I'm not so fond of Gaz's uber-nasal vocals on the original, but this version has a much nicer vocal take, and the drums give it a wonderful energy.

Chinese Whispers - dunno about unfinished, it's basically just some sound samples from all 13 tracks on The Isness. Interesting idea, but I really can't help feeling there was something more worthwhile from the sessions to include here! The title comes from the game of the same name, which is why it doesn't actually sound Chinese.

Haha, uber nasal? Is this a common british phrase? Funny, the british seem to borrow a lot of weird german phrases these days...I like it!
I actually too quite like the divinity-band version, must agree - Gaz' singing is a lot more relaxed on this one, I must admit I was also not too fond of his singing on the original album version when first listening.

And for EBS 0.5: yeah, the 'slowly...' track appeared also there! But I NEVER got anything on this mix when it comes to the part with the unreleased FSOL tracks. That tracklist is so confusing. That'll be a hard one to crack, Mr. Pandemonium! (but I'm sure you'll make it :) )

Pande-reviews: 2004.1 (BBC SixMix + Avrika)

PostTue Jun 17, 2014 1:45 pm

FSOL - BBC Radio 6 SixMix [radio mix] (02.05.2004) bootleg / unreleased

Image

One of my personal favorites, this mix sounds exactly like the MPB mixes, plus contains a nice interview too. Why this wasn't a part of the MPB series remains unknown - probably because it's a Gaz solo show. Anyway, lots of cool tracks, legendary bands and the standard slightly misleading tracklists by Gaz.

SixMix 2004, deconstructed & explained - read away:
(scroll to the end of the post to see just the tracklist)

00:00 Donovan - Get Thy Bearings - (Epic, 1968)
- A sweet/cool song by Donovan, that saxophone gets me every time!
- ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyxfCQG1t4w )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Donovan-The-Hurd ... se/1335509 )

02:49 - Interview starts
- questions about how they got into this kind of music...
- how they bought crates of unknown old music (20 near mint records for pound-fifty)
- they picked up Donovan like this, established contact later, and the rest is history.

04:50 Heaven & Earth - Feel The Spirit - (Ovation Records, 1973)
- This psychedelic folk group has just this one album, and it's perfect!
- Gaz reads wrong album title, that title is from a compilation that contains the said track.
- ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdvccq5WZKE )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Heaven-Earth-Ref ... ase/592375 )

09:11 - Interview continues...
- how they don't care what the track name is or who is it by, just that it's good music. Well, that explains a lot about the tracklists they provide :)

11:19 Black Sabbath - Planet Caravan - (Vetigo, 1970)
- A personal favorite of mine long before I got into FSOL... This track is pure magic!
- ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW3pZjmS3rg )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Black-Sabbath-Pa ... ase/696772 )

15:17 - Interview continues...
- links of these tracks with the Isness style.
- the trauma of making great albums (mentiones The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers...)

19:11 Cocteau Twins - Blue Bell Knoll - (4AD, 1988)
- ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcH2iy3HO2A )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Cocteau-Twins-Bl ... ease/28524 )

22:26 - Interview continues...
- talking about The Big Chill event.
- Gaz talks about how FSOL aren't doing the show, he's doing it solo, and FSOL is one more person, his brother Brian.

25:40 Leon Russell - The Ballad of Hollis Brown - (Shelter Recording Company Inc, 1974)
- The long hunted record by Gaz, he still can't find it, only Brian has a copy :)
- ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOgsle03U9o )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Leon-Russell-Sto ... se/2299979 )

27:39 The Dandy Warhols - Bohemian Like You - (Capitol Records, 2000)
- This track has nothing to do with the mix, it's a jingle track that BBC SixMix used at the time.
- ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CU3mc0yvRNk )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Dandy-Warhols-Th ... ase/367092 )

28:03 Bowling for Soup - Girl All The Bad Guys Want - (Ffroe Records, 2002)
- This track has nothing to do with the mix, it's a jingle track that BBC SixMix used at the time.
- ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGRxmYXi4Io )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Bowling-For-Soup ... ase/512612 )

28:20 Transmission intro
- lots of mash-up spoken samples and some background music...

- ( http://www.discogs.com/Tommy-James-And- ... se/1876808 )

Before the Avrika concert there was another one in Afishsa Picnic, Russia (15.05.2004), but I don't have any kind of bootleg sound carrier for this. You can read some experiences about it here.

AA - Live at Avrika Festival, Sweden (15.07.2004) bootleg / unreleased

Image

The Arvika Festival is a yearly event in Arvika, Sweden. In 2004 The Amorphous Androgynous headlined alongside artists like Faithless, Keane, Echo and The Bunnymen etc. etc.

Some of the set was broadcast on a Swedish radio station, from which this tracklist came, and a bootleg has become widely circulated on the internet. I actually have 3 versions of this one, 54:05, 54:58 and 57:00. I'm gonna go with the shortest one which is just the concert, without the swedish announcements on the radio and promo stuff. Also it's the best sound quality.

Hearing this now, a few times, I actually quite enjoyed it, and felt really sad I haven't seen AA performing live - you can really hear the band is having a really good time jamming the hell out of the Isness/Alice tracks. I wouldn't go and comment each track, they all sound live (with a fair amount of diferent sections) and fresh and phenomenal - the only minus here is that they didn't have a (female) singer, so most of the times the vocals are sampled and/or sung by Gaz and the band.

- Ross lists a track at the end called "This Is The Love" but I hear Indian Swing as the last track. Ross?

00:00 Elysian Feels (Live)
05:55 The Mello Hippo Disco Show (Live)
12:08 The Lovers (Live)
19:12 All Is Harvest (Live)
25:50 The Prophet (Live)
32:30 The Emptiness of Nothingness (Live)
39:32 The Witchfinder (Live)
45:50 Billy The Onion (Live)
50:08 Indian Swing (Live)
54:05 End.

the band:
Garry Cobain - vocals & samplers
Stu Rowe - guitar
Baluji Shrivastav - sitar
Mikey Rowe - bass & hammond

This is the Love was given on the tracklist by Graham after the show... back when The Witchfinder was still called Zep. Who knows if it exists. Its existence has been called into doubt on more than one occasion...

Pande-reviews: 2005.0 (FSOL - A MPB Mix Vol.5, XFM)

PostSun Jun 29, 2014 10:48 pm

FSOL - A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble Exploding in Your Mind Vol.5
(XFM London) [radio mix] (14.09.2005)

- bootleg / first official release 15.11.2008, currently unavailable

Image

Another incredible episode in the series of Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble Exploding In Your Mind mixes. This one and Vol.6 were played a week apart on XFM radio to promote Alice In Ultraland. Even though the cover says this is an AA mix, and it is advertized as that in a few places, but on the on the other hand, it is advertized as an FSOL mix (through out the mix) five times more. In my mind, the radio MPB mixes are by FSOL, and the official CD releases are compiled by AA, so we'll stick with that.

And another mystery solved by deconstructing these mixes - we Finally know where exactly is the sound of the 'Indian Pudding and Pipe' track (an unreleased gem by AA). Where we thought it was before today (in the 37th minute) is actually two tracks by Aphrodite's Child from the 666 album. 'Indian Pudding and Pipe' starts at 37:55 and lasts about 50 seconds. The exact sounds of Coconut, another unreleased AA track, remain still foggy...

Also found the Jon Brion's 'Phone Call' in the first/second minute, but Nazareth's 'Nigel's Hot Shit' is still nowhere to be found, even though is was listed by the band. Probably because Nazareth do not have a song named like that... well... it happened a few dozen times before :) Otherwise, I think we now have discovered ALL the tracks from this mix, only a handful of snippets / spoken samples remain unknown. This is one weird journey, it contains dozens of new tracks, also lot's of '70s and even '80s, all of them melted perfectly...

So, MPB 5, deconstructed & explained - read away!

I was always disappointed when My White Bicycle ended after the intro. Great song.

Tears for Fears - well, that track is a heavily Beatles-influenced song called 'Sowing the Seeds of Love' with very Gaz-like lyrics. Quite an anomaly in their catalogue, but makes complete sense in terms of the hippy-inspired stuff.

The Tears for Fears and Michael Jackson ones were, but not Sledgehammer. Interestingly, the animation on Sledgehammer was partially by Nick Park's Aardman Animations (later of Wallace & Gromit fame).
