The Amorphous Androgynous - A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble Exploding in Your Mind Vol.1 (Cosmic Space Music) [compilation mix] (24.11.2008)
Platipus - PLATCD190

Image

Even though the 'Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble' mix series started 11 years before any official (physical) release appeared, still not many people knew about them. Nothing surprising there, seeing how some FSOL concepts seem 'old' to us (here on the board), but in fact concepts like MPB that started in 1997; it took the world a dozen years to 'see' what they're doing and throw some awards at them.

Time Out described it as "quite simply the best compilation ever". What more can I say other than that I agree, completely :)

For those who think this MPB mix is a collage of the old radio mixes that never got an official physical release, here's some math facts for you:
- Only 11 out of 44 tracks have been used in the previous MPB mixes - that's 25% (even less if we exclude live events like The Big Chill & The Winter Chill).
- And 18 out of 44 tracks are new, post-2000 tracks - that's 40% - another proof that the psychedelic movement lives and reinvents itself in every decade, and is in fact eternal.

The company that decided this kind of compilation was worth the trouble of official (physical) release was Platipus Records. Platipus was a long-running and massively popular trance label based in the UK since 1993 (releasing Children by Robert Miles for example). In 2003, Platipus embarked on a new direction which encompassed a series of high quality compilation concepts, and the best one came in 2008, named 'A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble Exploding in Your Mind Vol.1'. Unfortunately, Platipus shut down in early 2010 with all the productions and co-productions from label owner Simon Berry, making this compilation some sort of a rarity.

All right... everybody online... looking good...

- First mixed on The Mello Hippo Disco Show, Ammocity (11.10.2001).

He's been often called Bob Dylan clone, but while they share same influences and some styles, I think they're very different artists in essence.
- Barabajagal is one of the higher rated of Donovan's albums, it has the Jeff Beck Group backing on this particular track.

- I still think everything these guys made was/is 30 years ahead of it's time.
- Can was a German experimental rock band formed in Cologne, West Germany, in 1968. Later labeled as one of the first krautrock groups, they transcended mainstream influences and incorporated avant-garde, minimalist, electronic, and world music elements into their often psychedelic and funk-inflected music.
- Can constructed their music largely through collective spontaneous composition, which the band differentiated from improvisation in the jazz sense, sampling themselves in the studio and editing down the results (sounds familiar?). Bassist/chief engineer Holger Czukay referred to Can's live and studio performances as "instant compositions".
- This album was mixed using the newly developed Artificial Head Sound Technique.

- Even though this sounds like a British folk from the Victorian era, actually Werkraum is the creative music works of German musician Axel Frank.
- OK wait, further research discovered why this song sounded so British: Queen Mab; A Philosophical Poem; With Notes, published in 1813 in nine cantos with seventeen notes, is the first large poetic work written by Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822), the English Romantic poet. After substantial reworking, a revised edition of a portion of the text was published in 1816 under the title The Daemon of the World.
- The lyrics of this version are probably re-tuned by Thomas Hood (1799-1845), an English poet, author and humorist.

Haven't heard this for ages. Rated X is just insane. I love how it flows into that Psychonauts-song, another highlight. Have to dig this out again, maybe time is right for it again. Strangely I always got some christmas-vibes from this, don't know why.

Hi guys,

I just saw / heard something quite unique, and I just have a simple question (to confirm something to... myself)

- Have you ever seen the EBV abbreviation to be used for something else than Electronic Brain Violence?

Epstein Barr Virus, basically Herpes... oh are we back in the realms of bacteria in a baboon's stomach and Brian's mysterious tape clue here, or is that a leap too far?

There's also german semi conductor business EBV Elektronik, which I don't think has any particular link to fsol.

There's an early '90s mention of it somewhere in The Most Important Moments of a Life.

Kiss 4 - Part 1 (quick fix, Gruppo track starts before Barbarella and they go together for some time)

11:31 Gruppo Di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza - Improvvisazione Per Otto (Sunrise) - (RCA Italiana, 1966)
- Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza (also known as The Group or Il Gruppo) was an avant-garde free improvisation group considered the first experimental composers collective. The collective was formed by Italian composer Franco Evangelisti in Rome in 1964. Drawing on jazz, serialism, musique concrete, and other avant-garde techniques developed by contemporary classical music composers such as Luigi Nono and Giacinto Scelsi, the group was dedicated to the development of new music techniques by improvisation, noise-techniques, and anti-musical systems. One of the notable members of this collective is the legendary Ennio Morricone.

Pande-reviews: 2009.0 (FSOL - EBS Vol.4)

FSOL - Electric Brain Storms Vol.4 (The Spirit of Dark and Lonely Water)
[web mix] (01.01.2009)

Released on The Pod Room on 01.01.2009. Currently unavailable.

Image

2009 was THE Mixing year for FSOL & AA. Aside from Zeebox 3 (which was basically archived material) no studio material was released in 2009, while on the mixing front we heard 2 EBS mixes, 2 MPB mixes (Vol.2 on CDs and Vol.8 on the radio mix series), another AA interview/mix mashup on Rob da Bank show, the Oasis remix, the Neotropic remix, some library music and some AA live shows. That's a whole lotta mixing :)

Electric Brain Storms Vol.4 ('transmitted' on the first day of 2009) was the first one that was exclusive to fsoldigital.com and not curated for some radio show, making it a web mix. Also the first one with it's own subtitle 'The Spirit of Dark and Lonely Water', a most fitting name for this dark yet beautiful mix. I recently read a 'fresh' fan describing FSOL as being able to be incredibly dark without being depressive - and I loved that description, it's simpler, but somehow captures more than the old-skool definition of euphoric sadness.

Otherwise, the mix has a about a third of the tracks originating from the '80s - which I find extremely weird, yet a pleasent surprise, personally discovering a few new '80s artists that are worth hearing. For me, '80s is the weakest decade for good music (in general), the tech went up (and advanced very much), but the music quality went down. Lots of people instantly would think 'no way, it's just not true', but if you take a moment and really think about it, the number of artists that are truly original and legendary but started their career in the 1980-89 period is extremely small.

- Electric Brain Storms Vol.4 - deconstructed and explained - headphones on - read away...
(made a lot of fixes in this 'new' tracklist, especially in the second part)
(scroll all the way to the end of the post in the 'spoiler' field if you want just a list of the tracks)

- Electric Brain Storms Vol.4 (Part 1) [58:20]

00:00 Donald Pleasence - The Spirit of Dark and Lonely Water - (BBC Public Information Film, 1973)
- The mix opens with the narrating voice of Donald Pleasence, setting a creepy atmosphere from the start.
- Lonely Water (widely known as The Spirit of Dark and Lonely Water) is a 1973 British Public Information short film Voiced By Donald Pleasence, mainly raising awareness to kids about ponds of water to be taken seriously or one could easily drown in them.
- ( )

00:03 Malcolm Clarke - The Unseeing Eye - (BBC Records, 1983)
- British composer and experimental electronic musician. Member of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop for 25 years (1969-19940. Clarke composed the incidental music for the Doctor Who serial The Sea Devils (1972).

I suppose it depends on your taste in music, but I can think of a lot. It depends on how much 'pop' (in a broad term) that you like, maybe.
09:32 FSOL - Viewed from The Right - (unreleased)
- It's before the Zeebox piece, not after. The otherworldly piano notes indicate that Daniel Pemberton is included.
Nope. Viewed From the Right was the original name for the string piece that became part of Sunken Ships.
37:02 FSOL - The Oldest Lady - (unreleased, later on FSOLdigital, 2010)
- Another sneak peak into Environments 3.
Love this version with the vocal sample on top of it.
1:00:40 ????? - Angry Neighbors
- Probably some sort of experiment..? / field recordings...
A field recording found on Freesound.org - I used the same one (without realising) on my album The Blackbirds' Revenge.
