Re: Pande-reviews: 2008.1 (AA - The Peppermint Tree)

Post by Pandemonium »

Dennis wrote:I think the main issue I have with Alice vs. Peppermint is the production quality. To my ears 'Alice' is the maybe most elaborate production work they ever did. The sound on this one is so delicate with layers of instruments, sounds, vocals interwoven so nicely with a myriad details to discover when listening with earphones. I mean yeah, the overall sound of it is the most 'progrock' and 'band-sounding' thing they did up to date, but that´s fine to someone who regularly enjoys sprawling polyrythmic 70ies progrock-epics from the "big four" and everything beyond... :D .

I think what "Peppermint" lacks most is the sound-quality and loudness-level that vary heavily throughout the whole album and makes it a kind of uneasy listening esp. on mp3. AND there are of course some of the lesser adored, more b-side-like pieces like Marylebone-Road or Rocket Fuel. But as said the highlights are essential like "Oblivion" or "Sunshine Day" with beautiful orchestrations. And I really do like "Riders" very much - simply love that cosmic 70ies organ sound... The title-track is OK, the ending instrumental part is nice, some of it appears in isness´ 'guru song' I think.

I really agree with everything Dennis said, up until the last 2 sentences, ... I agree only partially with that part - but otherwise spot-on :)

It is a curiously muddy sounding record, especially in the second half, which is a bit odd. That said, I find on many songs on Alice there's a bit too much going on - often loads of instruments seem to be improvising at the same time which lends it an unfocused, confusing sound.

Dennis - it was mentioned in one of the Wizards of Oz interviews, Gaz spoke about the fact they have about 30 songs for the next AA album, they need to be selected and the whole thing needs a fine tuning. He said later this year, which means it'll probably be next year now...

Ah, thanks Ross, I think I missed out some of that 'AA take over Quietus'-stuff that was linked on AA-FB-site. Cool thing - so 'The Cartel' does not count as regularly AA-studio-album for some reason? Is it because the 'Monstrous Bubble Soundtrack'-recordings are beside their regularly released albums as an on going series like Environments series? I think Gaz hinted something like that in some inteview if I remember correctly (?)

Pande-reviews: 2008.2 (Smart Systems + Cloudscraper)

Post by Pandemonium »

Smart Systems - Tingler [single remixes] (07.04.2008) Jumpin' & Pumpin' - 12 TOT 48

Image

Even though it appeared on 12" only to support the Pulse EPs CD digital remaster release (mentioned below), I'm really glad Tingler surfaced again and got three new remixes. There was also a small amount of promo CDrs for the stations. Tingler remains one of the most hardcore tracks ever done by Dougans/Cobain.

"From my dreams... so beautiful" spoken sample from the movie Dune (1984).

A1 - Tingler (Kouncil House Remix) [4:41]
- I've always liked the KouncilHouse mixes. Not much heaviness here, but nice break structures all around. Maybe even too much breakbeats, the track is so broken up, it barely has a flow. KouncilHouse was (back in 2008) a fresh new producer from South-East London. In 2008 he started a label with Micky Finn (d'n'b legend) and later he embraced SoundCloud as lots of post-2010 producers did.

A2 - Tingler (30Hz Remix) [5:11]
- James Ginzburg is an American producer (from Washington DC), but moved to Bristol (England) in 1998. His grime-breaks debut album (as 30Hz) Electric Sheep has just came out in 2008. Again, good breaks, but not enough flow.

B1 - Tingler (Smart Systems Remix) [6:33]
- This is an interesting take - it's actually an all new modern 2008 remix of the theme. Lots of echo and reverbs. Anyway, nothing beats the Original...

B2 - Tingler (Original) aka (Four By Four Mix) aka (State Side Swamp Mix) [4:35]
- So, this awesome rave horror story IS the original. Appeared as (State Side Swamp Mix) on Pulse EP3 and as (Four By Four Mix) on the original Tingler Remix single from 1991. Fresh and scary as ever!

6 Oscillators in Remmitance - Cloudscraper [single] (03.05.2008)

Image

An experimental ambient drone single that announced an album, that still haven't appeared 7 years later. So, nothing surprising in the FSOL universe I guess. Tagged as 'composed by Dougans/Cobain', but I can hardly see Gaz doing this kind of work post-2000.

So, how was this made:
6 oscillators are being triggered by light sensors reacting to the movement of the clouds across the sun. Recorded 26th Feb 2008. 6.30 min soundscape where each of the 6 oscillators are fed through echo's and reverbs. Taken from the album "Light Senses Dark Edges". Includes Cloudscraper video in .m4v format.

1 - Cloudscraper [6:30]

Video - Cloudscraper [8:03]

Pande-reviews: 2008.3 (Yage - The Woodlands of Old)

Post by Pandemonium »

Yage - The Woodlands of Old [album] (11.05.2008) fsoldigital.com - CD TOT 60
(MP3 @ FSOLDigital.com on 11th May 2008 / CD on 19th Nov 2008)

Image Image

Dougans/Cobain opened their fsoldigital.com indie-store in 2007. Eight years have passed and they graced us with more than a dozen albums. The weird thing is, none of their releases received proper media attention, almost Zero marketing was done - and no one quite understands why. The closest thing I could gather from all the FB comments by Gaz is that they still experiment and feel-out the world so they can come up with the next Big thing worth marketing and shouting about. Well, I guess... we'll see... I can't say I understand how FSOL feel Environment Five (for example) wasn't worth a shout... but maybe they know something we don't - we'll see...

But, in all their fair share of overlooked albums, one stands firmly at the top. The Woodlands of Old by Yage is definitely one the most overlooked albums in the history of music! This doesn't mean it's a perfect album - it's way too long (75 minutes) and has way too many tracks. The whole feel says, they just wanted to put it out, and if they did want to imagine an album concept, with a dozen tracks or so - the tracks are there, the melodies are enchanting and the beats are odd. The thing is, it's probably 75 minutes long because of the CD time-limit, and there are still unreleased tracks from these sessions. We got a teaser that an EP called Pygmy People will be released, and yet nothing happened...

So, Yage, the imaginary engineer got a proper full-length album in 2008. Yage had only one stand-alone release, the Fuzzy Logic EP form 1992, and as the case was with the Amorphous Androgynous alias, the post-2000 Yage sound had nothing to do with the pre-2000 Yage. This album was described as: "From the deserts of the Middle East to the rain forests of Brazil. Odd rhythms, eerie melodies." - quite a fitting description I must say. The ethnic feel dominates on this album and there are definitely a dozen instruments here that only ethno-muscologyst would recognize. The drums feel live and loose, courtesy of Will White, the drummer/member of Propellerheads, who allegedly contributes drums on only 3 tracks here, and I find this extremely hard to believe. Propellerheads, what happened to these guys..? I often joke as I have a folder of bands who had one perfect album and never appeared again, Propellerheads are among the finest in the bunch. Anyway, Will White is basically Brian's neighbor, lives in the Bristol area, even gives drumming lessons to Brian's son, so it's only natural they play around quite often in Brian's church/studio. The artwork is weird/abstract, made of painting shots by Lysa Bartlett (Brian's significant other) - no other people are credited despite the fact that most of the tracks sound like there is a full band behind them.

01 - The Woodlands of Old [4:12]
- Wonderful opening, loose jam of drums, bass, hammond maybe, some weird string instrument... At 1:42 some kind of Kaval kicks in with graceful beauty. I still wonder if someone played this Balkan/Anatolian instrument or maybe it was sampled. The feel is loose and cinematic, but on the darker side.

02 - An Odd Question from a Forest Bird [3:33]
- More Turkish like percussion and cinematic strings.

03 - From Thunder That Shakes [3:21]
- Sounds like an Indian name. At 1:50 the instruments that kick in are probably Zurnas, sounding trippy as fuck. The end sound like some spoken samples played backwards, but I'm really tired right now to try playing them backwards again to hear what they say.

04 - The Yage Letters [3:42] (Written by White)
- Named after the infamous book of letter exchange between William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. One of the best/trippiest tracks here. Percussion levels are off the map, most of them sound Brazilian.

05 - The Hunter's Moon [3:22]
- A jazzy piece with a repetitive 3 note piano part that reminds me of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. A truly haunting track, while some tribal voices make this track even scarier.

06 - Mountain Cloud Descending [3:58]
- Hmm... one of the tracks that probably didn't have to make the final cut.

07 - Procession [4:03]
- An eerie cinematic piece.

08 - Crow Hushing The Floating Woods [5:18]
- The drums are really something here. Scary dark piece, sampling Cosmic Rays (1975) by Bernard Fevre. Fevre is little known but important ambient experimentalist in the mid 70's from France. I put this one on repeat a few times, it really launched me back in the ISDN era.

09 - The Mahogany Tree (Shelterd) [2:39]
- An improvised acoustic guitar piece, quite lovely.

10 - He Laughed Himself to The Centre [5:54]
- Hmm... one of the tracks that probably didn't have to make the final cut. It has a few great sections, but overall I think it just doesn't work.

11 - Unsettling Sky [2:44]
- Short environmental piece, used more as a segue than a track.

12 - Humbled Before Your Presence [3:24]

13 - Who Had Such Foolish Care [3:58]
- Jazziness again...

14 - Circle The Corn [3:02]
- Another cinematic ride with samples that are so familiar they torture me for weeks...

15 - Centipede [3:01] (Drums by White)
- Sounds like something the MMW trio would write, awesome loose jazz track. The drums sound different from the previous tracks.

16 - Dry Wind Blown [3:44]
- The title describes exactly the sound of the Kaval. Some bagpipes in the background too.

17 - Haxaal's Dream [4:03]
- This track is very very beautiful, to a point where I really can't comment anything about it. Just shut up and listen!

18 - Heavily He Flies [4:12] (Drums by White)
- The liveliest track here. White's drums are simple but powerful. The last minute is like a whole different track, a calm piece with Kaval playing.

19 - The Dark Pines [3:16]
- They are dark indeed, like Dead Cities dark. Feels like an Environments series leftover somehow.

20 - The Sun Lends Warmth and Comfort [2:32]
- It's a laid back version of 'From Thunder That Shakes', adding some gipsy style fiddle playing on the top.

21 - A Welcome Beneath Night's Darkness [0:59]
- A segue closing the album?? Hmm... sounds like those wacky sounds from the Mello Hippo Disco Show project.

Strange, I complained about the length of this album a few times, yet I didn't felt when it played through. Brilliant. I'd still make it 17 tracks though.

- The sample library: (again, containing just one sample) :)

'Crow Hushing The Floating Woods' samples 'Cosmic Rays' by Bernard Fevre (album: The Strange World of Bernard Fevre (1977))

Re: Pande-reviews: 2008.3 (Yage - The Woodlands of Old)

Post by Ross »

Before Blackhill Transmitter came along, this was the only FSOLDigital release which sounded 'complete' - ie not a selection of experiments, not a side-project, but a thing of its own right. No surprise that it got a CD release. Yes, definitely a bit too long (they had a thing about that at the time - Archives 1-3, The San Monta Tapes, Hand Made Devices, The Peppermint Tree...), with a few tracks cut it wouldn't seem quite as 'samey' (for want of a less negative word.) Overall though, definitely an unfairly overlooked record and one I should listen to a lot more often. With the amount of releases that have come out on FSOLDigital, there are loads I haven't given the listen they deserve. This is the most notable.

Pande-reviews: 2008.4 (FSOL - EBS Vol.1)

Post by Pandemonium »

FSOL - Electric Brain Storms Vol.1 (Proton Radio, Downtime Sessions)
[radio mix] (16.06.2008)

Released on The Pod Room on 15.11.2008. Currently unavailable.

Image

First thing I notice about that cover are the Japanese characters. The closest translation I've come up with is that
ノイ口ーゼ means 'new openings - zero' - and what the hell that means I have no idea... The girl(s) on the picture isn't Sheuneen Ta, right?

So, the first official EBS mix. The form and standards of these mixes was hinted in 2006 with the EBS 0,5 mix, but as I recall that mix wasn't called an EBS mix until it was officially released on the Pod Room in 2008, so basically for a couple of months we only knew this was the first mix in the series, that set up the rules - which were - there are no rules. Literally, you will encounter every possible style of music on these brilliant mixes: electronic from every decade, noise, ambient, world, classical, filed recordings, spoken movie samples, you-name-it. If you have to generalize a pattern, than we can generally call it weird rare mainstream/underground music from every possible decade.

EBS1 is also full of old/new/unreleased/released material by FSOL:

EMS : Piano - This is the most pleasant surprise on the mix. We've been hearing whispers about this project, inspired by Brian's dad working on some soundtracks. In 2013 we heard an official EP from EMS : Piano, it was signed by Brian Dougans and Daniel Pemberton. But the two pieces that we have here are still unreleased. (The Vessel // Warm Drift)

The Jazz Mags wasn't even named at this stage (we got it as an FSOL track), but later developed to be another FSOL alias. Again, we got an official EP in 2014 but this track (Open Door) is still unreleased. Even though the piece sounds a bit jazzy, the term Jazz Mags actually refers to porn magazines.

- Old, but still unreleased FSOL tracks: We Have Explosive (2" Tape Reels Version) // Hallucination (Sunset Strip) // Echo Interview // Kaaawa (Little Star) // East Pacifica

- Another teaser for the Amorphik Archives that changed their name a dozen times and still didn't came out: Flickers - from the (Amorphik Alternatives)

- Zeebox 3 was announced through 3 unreleased tracks and it came out about a year later. (Its to Late // Lanes // Hill Peoples 2)

- Also, tracks from recent releases: Insides // Insulin - from the Archives, bits from Environments Parts 1&2, Riders from the Peppermint Tree, as well as hints of the upcoming releases for the next few months: Factories and Assembly from E2 and Fat Spat from A5.

The rest of the tracks are all over the place. So let's see, what we can see... Electric Brain Storms Vol.1 - deconstructed and explained - headphones on - read away...
(scroll all the way to the end of the post in the 'spoiler' filed if you want just a list of the tracks)

00:00 Transmission intro

00:24 The Future Sound of London - We Have Explosive (2" Tape Reels Version) - (unreleased)
- The 2" Tape Reels have been announced as a release for a long time, and the word is, they are still around, waiting...
- The familiar "I'm Here!!!" sample from Albert Pyun's Knights b-movie appear at the end.

01:57 The Advisory Circle - Hocusing for Beginners - (Ghost Box, 2008)
- Jon Brooks composes music for for film and television, produces and engineers music for other artists, and is the long-term mastering engineer for Trunk Records, and also runs the record label Cafe Kaput.
- What's even more interesting here is the label, Ghost Box, an independent music venture (ran by Jim Jupp and Julian House, the graphic designer) for artists who find inspiration in library music albums, folklore, vintage electronics, and the school music room. Inspired by spooky vintage electronics of the 1970s, the label soon found itself described as part of an emerging 'hauntology' scene. FSOL use a lot of their releases, like they are subscribed or something...

05:06 Mount Vernon Arts Lab - MV 3 - (Via Satellite, 1998)
- Mount Vernon Arts Lab is a musical project of Scottish musician Drew Mulholland, who has also recorded as 'Black Noise' and 'N'. After 2001 he continued to release material as Mount Vernon Astral Temple.
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Mount-Vernon-Art ... ase/418078 )

06:03 Nocturnal Emissions - Toyota - (Soleilmoon Recordings, 1996)
- Only the spoken part of the track is taken.
- Nocturnal Emissions (Nigel Ayers) is a sound art project that has released numerous records in music styles ranging from electro-acoustic, musique concrete, hybridised beats, sound collage, post-industrial music, ambient and noise music. The sound art has been part of an ongoing multimedia campaign of guerrilla sign ontology utilising video art, film, hypertext and other documents.

06:18 Belbury Poly - The Hidden Door - (Ghost Box, 2008)
- This is acually Jim Jupp, the co-owner of Ghost Box.
- ( )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Belbury-Poly-The ... se/2982933 )

09:38 EMS : Piano - The Vessel - (unreleased)
- Just a short snippet of this droney track. It goes a while with the next one too.

10:04 The Jazz Mags - Open Door - (unreleased)
- Listed as an FSOL track. Six years later we'll finally see an official Jazz Mags EP.

12:28 - Deepak Chopra - "Curving back within myself..." - (from the Bhagavad Gita, by Lord Krishna)
- Flashback to the MPB mix series... The Jazz Mags track continues.

13:48 Christian Marclay - Smoker - (Atavistic, 1997)
- Marclay is using phonograph records as his “musical instruments”, he mixes altered records on multiple turntables in a display of precise and abusive manipulations. He's collaborated with the likes of John Zorn, Kronos Quartet and Sonic Youth. The relationship between sound and image is central to Marclay’s work. He has made sculptures from discarded CDs, melted vinyl records, sewn record covers together to create mixed media works and created installations with works depicting musical instruments from museum collections.

- Announcing the Zeebox 84-87 Vol.3 (Heavily Involved in Drugs).

16:52 The Future Sound of London - Hallucination (Sunset Strip) - (unreleased)
- Yet another version of Hallucination. Yage as a single would've been a glorious long-form single...

19:46 The Future Sound of London - Insulin - (FSOLDigital.com, 2007)
- From The Archives Vol.2.

21:35 - "You have been programmed with a lot of confidence chips..." - (from Albert Pyun's Knights, 1993 movie)

21:51 David Whitaker - 1st Move - (???)
- Not sure about which Whitaker we are talking about here, I can't place this track... Some cool spoken samples at the end that I can't quite place...

23:43 Ennio Morricone - Ninna Nanna Per Adulteri - (1969)
- Another classic from the Maestro. How many generations of musicians has this guy inspired!? By the way, I'm up to 130 listens of his soundtracks and I yet live to hear one without a few brilliant themes.
- ( )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Ennio-Morricone- ... se/1938343 )

25:23 Delia Derbyshire - Time To Go - (1968-75)
- And another electronic giant. This one is from the Rephlex archives released in 2003, I doubt it was released before that.
- ( )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/BBC-Radiophonic- ... ase/212869 )

25:48 - "How would you describe this..." - (from Albert Pyun's Knights, 1993 movie)

25:51 Holger Czukay - Holger Czukay's Message to The Sales Force (aka Music Is a Miracle) - (EMI Electrola, 1981)
- Released as a rare promo only in 1981, re-released in 2011 as 'Music Is a Miracle'
- Legendary German musician born in the Free City of Danzig (now Gdańsk in Poland). Czukay studied under Karlheinz Stockhausen from 1963-1966 and co-founded the influential rock group Can in 1968. Say no more...

31:20 - "So, the rumors are true. You really do exist..." - (from Albert Pyun's Knights, 1993 movie)

31:21 The Future Sound of London - Environments (Part 1) - (FSOLDigital.com, 2007)

33:06 The Future Sound of London - Echo Interview - (unreleased)
- Awesome audio intro interview from the '90s.

33:45 The Amorphous Androgynous - Flickers - (unreleased)

36:07 The Future Sound of London - East Pacifica - (unreleased)
- And flashbacks to the ISDN era...

39:27 ????? - ????? (Come A Cropper?)
- (NOT THIS TRACK!, This Is The Kit - Tangled Walker, probably not that band either)
- I've listened everything this band ever released, and it wasn't pleasent! Hey, it wouldn't be an FSOL mix if there wasn't at least ONE unknown track.

41:40 The Future Sound of London - Factories and Assembly - (FSOLDigital.com, 2008)
- A short sneak-peak at the upcoming Environments 2.

- ( http://www.discogs.com/Download-III/release/9497 )

45:53 - Margo Lane - "I was lying naked on a beach in the South Seas..." - (from The Shadow, 1994 movie)
- ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111143/quotes )

47:53 Osho / EMS : Piano - Warm Drift - (unreleased)
- Osho speaks and EMS : Piano lays a 'Warm Drift' in the back.

- (NOT THIS TRACK!, This Is The Kit - Tangled Walker, probably not that band either)
- I've listened everything this band ever released, and it wasn't pleasent! Hey, it wouldn't be an FSOL mix if there wasn't at least ONE unknown track.
Oh God, the whistling track. I'd LOVE to know what this is, it's so fucking catchy.

I think 'Insulin' is actually part of the Sunset Strip version of Hallucination, by the way. It's definitely a Yage remix so I considered it part of that track.

Yeah, you're probably right about Insulin, but that piece is actually released officially - so I'll probably leave it like that...

Working on EBS 2 these days - such an epicness - they haven't had 3 hour long mix since the Kiss Series 16 years before.
- I have to go through E2 and A5 before that, but now I'm into mix-mode and having hell of a time :)

One thing I noticed on the first EBS 2 pass - seems like no-one who gives a shit about the tracklists haven't listened to it start-to-end without falling asleep :) (me included) - because the last track is just... even the level-1 fans know that one :) - how did it went unlisted for 6+ years is beyond me :D

If you're talking about the Dead Cities bit at the end, I always loved that, great to hear a jumbled up version. I've never tried to do a proper tracklist for it as it gets so bloody complicated! One thing that might help, the Luc Ferrari piece is actually 'Presque Rien Avec Filles'
