I quite like the Ammocity one, less so the other. They were both billed as Mello Hippo Disco Radio Show, by the way.

The Pod Room one is the soundtrack to the pilot episode of the TV show. I really cannot imagine what it would have been like to watch...

Wondering in the first post of this thread if Zeebox 1 had Brian on the cover (as a kid),
I'm almost certain it's him (picture taken from Brian's FB)

Oh wise Pande... In your By Any Other Name review you say all the tracks are from the 1990-1992 period... any idea which year each track is from and if they appeared anywhere else originally?

I can't really place the exact years on each track... I don't think anyone can - including Brian & Gaz :)
- These tracks were dug out from the old tapes by accident... some of those tapes ended up on From The Archives series...

I can say that most of these tracks are from 1991 and 1992 (zero, one or maximum two tracks sound like 1990 to me).

Originally, they haven't appeared anywhere before - although there are some bits and pieces and the usual recycled beats that appear in other '90s tracks.

Pande-reviews: 2001.4 (FSOL - PNG Translations)

Post by Pandemonium »

FSOL - Papua New Guinea Translations EP [re-imagined] (29.10.2001)
Jumpin' & Pumpin' - CD TOT 52 / LP TOT 52 / 12 TOT 44P3 // Hypnotic - CLP 1217-2

Image

With the duo reunited (somewhere in mid-to-late 2000), they settled into their new studio called The Galaxial Pharmaceutical. The live space studio allowed the arrival of various friends, musicians & long time acquaintances, jamming around Gaz's tapes. Hundreds of pieces of music were recorded over this time, and around twenty mixes of a new album were completed. As the pair agonized over which mix to release, planing their comeback, they decided to finally release a longform EP/single for PNG, called Translations, hinting they translated the 90s ambient techno anthem into a psychedelic acoustic journey.

To be honest, this is the first (and the last) FSOL release that I didn't listen in the original year of its release (since I became a fan). I somehow missed it... heard it for the first time two weeks after I heard The Isness, at the end of 2002. Hearing it today (early 2014) I must say I hear way more in this record that I did back then. It's a mesmerizing and bizarre (yet delightful) record that tickles my brain in unique places. It's an amazing meltdown of psychedelic rock, orchestral funk, even some jazz improvisations, some Indian mysticism, and the superb mixing / production of FSOL.

Who's credited on the record:

(the people we know about)
- Brian Dougans aka Stone Freshwaters - Piano, Harmonica, Effects [Electric Boxes] / Engineer / Written by
- Gaz Cobain aka One Man Band Of Cosmos - Guitar [12 String], Acoustic Guitar, Voice / Written by
- Future Sonic Orchestra Limited* (another FSOL abbreviation) - Strings
- Linda Lewis - Voice [Female Voices on The Lovers] – English funk/soul/pop vocalist, best known for her version of Rudy Clark's "Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)" (1975), also has provided vocals for David Bowie, Al Kooper, Cat Stevens, Jamiroquai etc. etc.
- Baluji Shrivastav's Incredible Sitar Magic Band - Sitar, Sitar [Dilruba], Tabla – Baluji is a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist from India. Being completely blind, the is self-taught musician breaking the dogmas in India of mystical dynasties, guru teachers and having to have eyes to master Indian music. He was a AA resident until after the Alice album.
- Gary Lucas - Voice ['love Is The Lover'] – American fusion guitarist with a impressive catalog of albums. He played with Captain Beefheart and later in the Jeff Buckley band. He was with the AA team a long time (split off a year or two after the Peppermint Tree, I think...).
- Mike Rowe - Organ [Hammond], Mellotron – Multi-instrumentalist, best known as a keyboard player. He's with the AA team for a long time now, even made an appearance on Environments 4 in 2012. Often played for Oasis too.
- Paula Flack - Design [Golden Image Texture] – actually a redesign of the original cover by Buggy G. Riphead - Paula is a UK manager, project coordinator who also worked with Donovan.

(the people we know little of) (lots of mysterious names here, I'd love some more inside info for these people...)

– Stinky Rowe (Stuart Rowe) - Electric Guitar – the resident guitarist for the PNGT & The Isness sessions...
- Paolo Longheu - Guitar, Voice – a mysterious musician that played on the Wooden Ships translation and is not mentioned anywhere else.
- The Major - Banjo, Vibraphone, Tambura [Tamboura] – another mysterious musician that worked on the PNGT & The Isness sessions...
- Herb Moons - Drums, Percussion – another mysterious musician that worked on the PNGT & The Isness sessions...
- Jack Dalston - Saxophone – another mysterious musician that worked on the PNGT sessions...
- Christine Lala - Photography By - the booklet photos by this Lala person, a friend of Gaz. Also had photos on The Isness and the MPB Vol.1

Tracklist:
Translation 1: Papua New Guinea 12" Original [4:58]
- The original version that we all know and love. It sounds good on any given day, and it sounds fantastic on some good days... Breaking down the elements of this track in order to inspire the next 7 tracks is really... a swoop of genius.

Translation 2: Papsico [9:50]
- The bassline just grooves through the whole track. The vocal patterns are phenomenal and very crafty. Occasional flutes and the original 4 notes on the piano... enchanting. The keyboard variations on the theme are very amusing and just tease you all around. I could never in a million years imagine PNG played like this... And WTF is Papsico? (My eyes read this Papasico for 10 years, I don't know why...)

Translation 3: The Lovers [9:05] Electric Guitar – Stinky Rowe (Stuart Rowe) / Voice [Female Voices] – Linda Lewis
- The same bassline from Papsico continues, only a bit slower. The Loves just slides into you with that funky/jazzy relaxed feeling, and then the persussions just enhance it. This awesome track (or a similar take of it) ended up as opening of the official version of the Isness album, but here (and only here) we have the full 9 minute version of pure tripping. The funky wah-wah guitar, the sitars and the orchestral funk background arrangements are really nothing short of the touch of a genius. The vocals of Linda Lewis are rare but they add a rare haunting beauty to the track. This was always one of my favorite FSOL/AA tracks, topped in its funkiness only by some recent tracks from the Cartel.

Translation 4: Wooden Ships [6:02] Guitar – Paolo Longheu
- Another jazz improv on the theme. This Longheu guy makes great soundscapes with the guitar. Maybe the guitar is a bit too loud over the rest channels, but its making a point on the opening, continuing mid-track in a more relaxed and acoustic fashion with some la-la vocals. The drum break just grooves and grooves and grooves...

Translation 5: The Great Marmalade Mama In The Sky [4:38]
- PNG in faster electric funk style, cool. That about sums it up.

Translation 6: Requiem [6:05]
- Beautiful playing of various acoustic string instruments over PNG ambiance. Who provides the female vocals here (??), they're magical. This is a very mysterious piece... Requiem... for who?

Translation 7: Things Change Like The Patterns And Shades That Fall From The Sun [6:01]
- It wouldn't be a psychedelic or funky record without the Hammond keyboards - they open like a motherfucker. The mystery deppens. When I first heard the saxophone entering the track, I got goose bumps all over my body... And those live drums, playing the PNG beats as they were ment to be played like that... speechless...

Translation 8: The Big Blue [7:39] Electric Guitar – Stinky Rowe (Stuart Rowe)
- A suitable laid back ending, with the same sax patterns from the previous track. These last two tracks have the best use of echo in the production that I've ever heard in a funk arrangement. And the loose guitar/sitar combos - this track really sounds like the soundtrack of "not having a single care in the world" or as the internet slang goes "not a single fuck was given that day".

Things Change Like The Patterns And Shades That Fall From The Sun

There was a promo 12" limited to 300 copies. The A side is actually Papsico, longer than the official version for 30 seconds, but I think it's the same take.
The version of The Lovers is yet another new studio take - exclusive for this 12" and otherwise unavailable. It opens the same, but the mid and end section are more stripped down, but not all that different from the original.

A - Papua New Guinea (Amorphous Androgynous Translations) aka Papsico [10:20]
B - The Lovers [5:37]

Lots of lovely stuff on the record, my only criticism is that it just seems a bit too long. If it were a normal EP length, about 40 minutes, I'd probably like it a fair bit more. Knock a minute off most of the tracks, and cut Papsico and The Lovers down to about six each, and I'd probably rate it about as highly as their other EPs.

The Big Blue is probably my favourite track, I just think it's incredibly clever how they incorporated elements of the other seven tracks into it to make one big finale. Plus I love backwards guitar anyway.

Pande-reviews: 2001.5 (FSOL - The Winter Chill - Live Mix)

Post by Pandemonium »

FSOL - The Winter Chill, Live @ Lulworth Castle (08.12.2001) bootleg / unreleased

Image

A second psychedelic DJ set from Gaz for the Big Chill festival at the Lulworth Castle, this time at their Winter Chill edition in December 2001.
We covered most of the tracks that appear here in previous mixes/live shows from 2001, so let's just look at some info about the tracks/artists that are new in this mix:
- Andreas Vollenweider - Swiss new age/classical musician (born 1953). His primary instrument is an electrically modified harp of his own design, but he also plays a wide variety of instruments from around the world, including the Chinese guzheng.
- The Busy Signals - aka Howard Hamilton, a US electronic/ambient musician who worked only in the 1999-2002 period.
- Sohail Rana - Pakistani music composer for films (born 1938). He is now based in Canada.
- Noonday Underground - British trip-hop/downtempo/acid jazz band consisting of DJ Simon Dine and singer Daisy Martey. Dine had previously been a member of Adventures in Stereo. Martey was for a time the singer in Morcheeba. The band name came from a book about The Who.
- Broadway Project - Broadway Project is musician Dan Berridge from Bristol. Reviewers often describe the music as "cinematic" and it combines elements of ambient, jazz and hip hop. The epic nature of his records has led to him being commissioned to write scores for a number of feature films and British television programs.
- Millie Small - Millie is a Jamaican singer-songwriter, best known for her 1964 cover version of "My Boy Lollipop".
- Harvey Mandel - American guitarist known for his innovative approach to electric guitar playing. Mandel is one of the first rock guitarists to use two-handed fretboard tapping.
- Mahavishnu Orchestra - Led by John McLaughlin, this group was considered an important pioneer in the jazz fusion movement.
- CSS / Blue Mink - Collective Consciousness Society, more commonly known as CCS, were a British musical group, led by blues guitarist Alexis Korner. Formed in 1970 by musical director John Cameron and record producer Mickie Most, CCS consisted largely of session musicians, and was created primarily as a recording outfit. Blue Mink was a British five-piece pop group, that existed from 1969 to 1974 - members overlapped with CCS. I don't know the exact record the Whole Lotta Love Live version is taken from, but I'm 100% sure it's a live version by CCS or Blue Mink.
- Ramsey Lewis - Ramsey Emmanuel Lewis, Jr. (born 1935) is an American jazz composer, pianist and radio personality. Ramsey Lewis has recorded over 80 albums and has received seven gold records and three Grammy Awards so far in his career. His version of Dear Prudence came out only a few weeks after the official Beatles song, and was a big hit in the USA. Actually, the whole Mother Nature’s Son by Lewis was a consisted of covers from The White Album (by The Beatles).

Pande-reviews: 2001.6 (FSOL - A MPB Mix Vol.2, BBC1)

Post by Pandemonium »

FSOL - A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble Exploding in Your Mind Vol.2
(BBC Radio 1) [radio mixes] (23-28.12.2001)

- bootleg / first official release 15.11.2008, currently unavailable

Image

To explain something right away, the dates and the lengths are confusing, so:
Part 1 (Broadcast version): Paul Thomas's One World show on Radio 1 (28.12.2001)
Part 1 (Pod Room version): The version that appeared on The Pod Room in 2008 is different to the broadcast version.
Part 2: Annie Nightingale's show on Radio 1 (23.12.2001) (a 30 minute mix on Annie Nightingale's show, the full 42 minute set appeared on The Pod Room in 2008)

And now, you'd better give me a tap on the back, because I Fucking nailed the MPB 2 broadcast! :)
Only 3 short pieces remain unknown, but not for long...

So, let's see what new psychedelic gems appeared here:
- Cymande - awesome British funk group formed in 1971 in London, England by musicians from Guyana, Jamaica and Saint Vincent.
- Roy Wood - English singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He was particularly successful in the 1960s and 1970s as member and co-founder of the bands The Move, Electric Light Orchestra, and Wizzard. And he's just super weird!
- Gabriele Ducros - appears on Freedom Power, a rare Italian compilation of psychedelic funk.
- Ennio Morricone - the master himself, with a rare track from a Italian crime movie.
- Color Climax - Two man outfit from Coventry. Paul T is a former member of early 90's Hip Hop crew Unanimous Decision. Named after a Danish pornography company.
- Stomu Yamash'ta - Japanese percussionist, keyboardist and composer. He is best known for pioneering and popularizing the world music genre after blending traditional music with popular music in the 1960s and 1970s. He retired from music shortly after to become a monk.
- Mecki Mark Men - Lead by keyboardist and vocalist Mecki Bodemark, MECKI MARK MEN are considered one of the first big Swedish psychedelic acts.
- Valentin Mehler - mysterious dude who I can only find on a mixtape that David Holmes made in 2002.
- Swami Vivekananda - Indian Hindu monk and chief disciple of the 19th-century saint Ramakrishna. He was a key figure in the introduction of the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world and is credited with raising interfaith awareness, bringing Hinduism to the status of a major world religion during the late 19th century.
- I Marc 4 - I Marc 4 were best known for their funky Italian soundtrack style.

Dead Can Dance - The Host of Seraphim starts around 2.30 into part 1:

Runs alongside the Jeff Buckley track.

Ofcourse, I missed it because the first time I heard the Buckley track the strings were so perfectly mixed, I thought there are some distant vocals in it... but there aren't, it's just some modified strings.

Plus, the Host of Seraphim vocals are etched in my mind in an octave as the ones from the first two minutes of the track, but in the second half there is a different set of vocals in a different style and octave (Lisa Gerrard is an amazing singer...) they are the ones used in the mix.

So, in Part 1 - broadcast version - at 1:23 the second octave vocals begin, and go in and out throughout the track...

in Part 1 - Pod Room version - at 3:06 the second octave vocals begin, and at the 5:38 we have fist octave (signature) vocals from the Host of Seraphim...

...now I have to go back and fix all the tracklists from 2001 transmissions :)

When I wrote out those original tracklists, nobody had identified the Jeff Buckley track, so I always assumed it was part of the DCD track as they were always alongside each other, which is why it's the only one that appeared on my site. We're getting there!

:D Well, the kid has something to do with it, but not much...

The main reason is - I'm mining data and stats for a huge amount of things because I wanna start a business (an online one, more or less), so that kinda takes a lot of time...

Anyway, The Isness review is almost done :) [it's huge, I might edit it a little]

A small but important update on Kiss Test 2 Part 1 (thanks to Tito/RONTXO) :)

at 23:53 it is Datura - Yerba Del Diablo (Achico) - (Trance Records, 1991)
not 23:53 Datura - Eternity - an unknown/unreleased mix as we previously thought.

PS - I'm having strong urges to get back at the Kiss mixes for another detailed pass - I think I'll discover a lot more... but I should probably keep going forward...
