Oh God, good luck with that. Barely anything goes on for more than a minute or so on that mix.

MPB3 is easily my favourite of the MPB-podcasts (Ok, along with the first one from 97'), I especially love how everything is melted together on this one with some tracks only played for a few seconds and others played simultanously, as someone wrote here on the forums 'random onslaught of psychedelic insanity' or so, that's just it. And a lot of tracks are almost remixes with a lot of noises and samples on top, absolutely love that. When I first heard the Polyphonic Spree album I almost was a bit dissapointed about that missing string-sample thats in the mix, it just fits so perfectly.

Yeah, it's a very solid mix made with lots of preparing. Heavily influenced by Zappa/Mothers.

Pande-reviews: 2003.0 (FSOL - A MPB Mix Vol.4, Resonance FM)

FSOL - A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble Exploding in Your Mind Vol.4
(Resonance FM London) [radio mix] (28.01.2003)

- bootleg / first official release 15.11.2008, currently unavailable

Image

This is hands-down the weirdest MPB mix of them all. 90 minutes of psychedelic insanity largely referencing Christianity, and it sounds like a parody on the first try, but if you give it a few shots, you'll notice that this is a really good mix, with an insane amount of tracks (more than 80) packed in 90 minutes. Most of the tracks are chopped up and remixed with a large number of spoken samples and environments.

Huge influence of Italian & German psychedelia, as well as some musicals, and you will notice, that there are about 5 or 6 records (most of them compilations) that source half the tracks of this mix. So, MPB 4 - deconstructed & explained - read away...

(...and Yes, I am expecting some kind of Board diploma for digging out all these jewels! :) )

(scroll to the end of the post to see just the plain tracklist)

00:00 Rotary Connection - Soul Man - (Cadet Concept Records, 1968)
- From the debut album by Rotary Connection, half of the tracks from this one were used in this mix.
- Rotary Connection was a psychedelic soul jazz fusion band started by Marshall Chess, son of Leonard Chess, the Polish jew that started Chess Records, the label that (I dare say) invented electric blues in the '50s. It's all well documented in the Cadillac Records movie ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1042877/?ref_=nv_sr_1 ) which is a must-watch.
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Rotary-Connectio ... ase/389896 )

00:18 The Sunworshippers - The Sunworshippers Speak - (Trunk Records, 2001)
- A number of tracks were used from this witty compilation. Trunk Records specialize in lost film scores, unreleased TV music, library music, old advertising jingles, art, sexploitation and kitsch releases.
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Various-Resurrec ... ase/409405 )

00:30 Mylo - Sunworshipper - (Breastfed Recordings, 2003)

01:56 The Litter - Apologies to 2069 - (Hexagon, 1968)

02:16 Mike Sammes Singers & The Ted Taylor Organsound - Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken - (Davjon, 1968)

- French progressive rock band founded in Paris in 1969 by classically trained drummer Christian Vander, tells the story of a group of people fleeing a doomed Earth to settle on the planet Kobaïa. :) Well, that's what you get when I'm alone for a week :)
(the wife and the little one went visiting relatives in another town - so my free time increased exponentially)

- I'm thinking... I want to collect UNMIXED versions of all the radio mixes (Kiss, MPB, EBS) - I am hunting/downloading most of these tracks anyway so... it would be cool to have them (and share them)... I don't know if I should start that right now or wait after the reviews... What do you guys think?

I did that for the MPB / Big Chill / Mello Hippo mixes 2001 / 2002, but then the tracks started getting more obscure and gave up, ha.

Really though, how the hell did you find all of these?

Well, I did recognized 7 or 8 tracks, then found out those compilations that contribute about 30 tracks to the mix,
and the rest is a combination of Shazam (audio recognition software) and double/triple checking with YouTube and What.CD :)

EDIT: and ofcourse Google and my personal digital archive of 30.000 releases :)

Aha. Again, amazing work man. I don't think I have it in me to do this kind of thing - I did have a run through everything with lyrics last year and managed to do a reasonable update to the MPB tracklists, but never would have got further, so you're really helping me update the site and keep it as accurate as possible. :)

Pande-reviews: 2003.1 (FSOL - PNG d'n'b Remixes)

Post by Pandemonium »

2003 was pretty much uneventful for Dougans/Cobain. They broadcasted MPB 4 in January as you read a few posts up, then released digital remasters of Stakker Eurotechno from 1989 (reviewed here) and Humanoid Sessions 84-88 (reviewed here) both on Rephlex - still to this day I wonder if Richard D. James and Brian Dougans ever met in Rephlex and what did they talked about...

Then in July they had a concert as AA in Russia on the Stereoleto Festival (we don't have any kind of recording of that to review). And that was it for 2003, aside for the bootlegs below (I know I said no bootlegs, but these are exception to the rule, because they were pretty big event in 2003).

FSOL - Papua New Guinea (Bootleg drum'n'bass Remixes) (08.09.2003)
White Labels - DAONE 001 / DNB 001 / PAB 001

Image Image

In September, three different, mostly single-sided 12" bootleg drum'n'bass remixes of PNG hit the scene, and (I don't understand why) they became pretty big on the dancefloors. Probably because the d'n'b scene was at it's highest peak in 2003, and these guys were fresh and promoted by Hospital Records - a drum & bass giant of it's time (some say they still go strong, but I kinda don't agree).

A. Papua New Guinea (High Contrast vs. FSOL) [7:56]
- High Contrast is a Welsh producer that got big with his 2002 debut True Colours. Apparently he doesn't drink, smoke or do anything naughty... Some of his album are pretty good, but this remix is really boring. It has a nice opening and a few cool effects but then it goes into a boring d'n'b loop for 5 minutes! The track slows down in the middle, contains a well known Jimmy Castor Bunch sample from Troglodyte (from 1972) "What we're gonna do here is go back, way back..." and the boring loop continues... I guess it was good enough for the dancefloors...

A. Papua New Guinea (Papa's Got A Brand New Guinea Mix by Nu:Tone) [7:50]
- Nu:Tone was a rising d'n'b star (if there is such thing, I'm not trying to be cynical here, I respect the semi-underground d'n'b movement too much to call them stars) with a handful of 12" singles behind him. His mix uses the same opening horns that High Contrast used, but his opening is much much longer, and a little bit better. The loop he uses is more garage-like and has more PNG in it, but it also get boring after 3-4 minutes of 'nothing-happens-in-the-track' except an occasional drop.

A. Papua New Guinea (Vector Burn Remix) [7:03]
- I like this guy the most. His releases are rare but always filled with quality d'n'b (and he hasn't released an album yet!). This mix was ready in 2001/2002, but this was his first official unofficial pressing. Vector Burn released a web compilation a month ago (May 2014) with all of his 12" only singles, and he has a few different versions of the PNG remix.
- This mix sounds like a bad-mother-fucker (in a good way), with awesome effects and the whole neurofunk feeling. People just went crazy on the dancefloors!

I really can't listen to any of the remixes that use those Future Music made samples. It's not hard to cut samples from the Dumb Child of Q mix like Hybrid did, at least.

Hey, amazing work, MPB 4 is really a beast! I remember a FSOL-Track called "Slowly Falling Backwards" appeared on one of those older lists for MPB 4 on Ross' site, does someone know about it? Maybe it's only one of those environment bits'n pieces, I always found it a cool trackname, really wished there would be a proper track behind it.

If you mean the track 'She Fell Backwards' from Archive 5 or 6 - no, I don't think it appeared on the MPB 4...
It did appear on the Kiss '94 mix though...

Oh yes, that is closer year-wise...
I didn't thought of that - because my chronology listening is on 2004/2005 right now :)

- Hearing it now - I'm almost positive that Dennis is right and there is some connection, I'll find it when I get there, no time tonight :) ...
