FSOL - Electric Brain Storms Vol.2 (PBS Radio, The Pod Room)
[radio mix] (15.11.2008)

Image

The second mix in the EBS series was supposed to come out in early August 2008 on PBS Radio in Australia, but that broadcast never happened. It was supposed to promote Environments II, it sure has a lot of (at that point) unreleased tracks from the Archives and the Environments series. So, this mix ended up as an exclusive opening of The Rod Room (15 Nov 2008), a section on the FSOLdigital.com website that dropped (at the opening) dozens of Kiss mixes, ISDN transmissions, MPB mixes, EBS mixes and a few other mixes that didn't belong into any of the series. It was heavenly to finally see official versions with better quality of all those bootleg mixes that we took from the Disenchanted FTP and listened to for years. Most of the mixes (well, all of them except the ISDN ones) were taken down few years later due to copyright issues, but true fans had plenty of time to get them.

Technically EBS 2 was released after EBS 3 (which transmitted on 26 Sep 2008), but I'll review EBS 2 first for continuity's sake. EBS 2 is a 3 hour mix and it's the longest one in the EBS series to date. The last time they did 3 hour shows was the Kiss mixes period in 1992/93, about 15 years ago. FSOL doing mixes and remixes really kicked off around this time, so in the next 5 years most of their work was mix transmissions, mixing, remixing, re-imagining, soundtracks, producing, and releasing albums/singles from friends and fans on FSOLdigital.com. Literally, if we set aside the next two volumes of Archives and Environments, everything else they did was mixing and remixing for 5 years. That was the front of the store of course, while in the back new plans and new compositions were brewing all the time. Astonishing... Their remixing run didn't end in 2013, but they at least started releasing new original material at that point.

EBS 2 has it all - an awesome mix of ambient, movie samples, experimental krautrock, early electronic avant-garde & musique concrete... should I go on? The names in this mix are like a journey through the history of electronic music, from it's very early roots in the '50s to the present day. A F---ing beginners lesson for all the ignorant people who are/were convincing me that the rock genres were older than the electronic music.

So, we have the standard promotion of unreleased FSOL material, announcing Environments 3 (some of it is still unreleased, as usual), more previews of the EMS : Piano project, more teasers of the upcoming Zeebox 3 album, some unreleased Yage tracks, and last but not least - Clyde Port Authority - a film for the Scottish Film Board with music from Bill Dougans (Brian's dad). There were rumors that this album/soundtrack would eventually be released, but at this point I think it probably won't. Bill Dougans passed away in 2013, and Brian formed the Blackhill Transmitter project as a tribute. Blackhill also uses recordings made by Bill. Are they the same recordings of the Clyde Port Authority, well, that remains unknown, for now. Also, there were more picture hints about the Clyde Port Authority project in the limited mini-book called Artworks in 2014, so... I guess there's still hope.

- Electric Brain Storms Vol.2 - deconstructed and explained - headphones on - read away...
(scroll all the way to the end of the post in the 'spoiler' field if you want just a list of the tracks)

00:00 Transmission intro

00:27 The Future Sound of London - Heart Sick - (unreleased, later on FSOLdigital.com, 2010)
- Appeared on Environments 3 in 2010. This track dates back to 2006 from the San Monta sessions and the Kinetic event. Interesting stand alone track, but it didn't quite fit on Environments 3.

04:21 Eno / Moebius / Roedelius - Broken Head - (Sky Records, 1985)
- This one was actually mixed in Kiss T1 back in 1992, talking about flashbacks - we'll hear a lot of them in the EBS series. Begegnungen II is a project by Brian Eno and Moebius / Roedelius aka Cluster aka Kluster, one of the very first kraut / industrial acts hailing from Germany.

- ( http://www.discogs.com/Eno-Moebius-Roed ... ase/967979 )

04:27 Delia Derbyshire & Barry Bermange - Dreams Part 4 (Sea) - (BBC, 1964)
- The spoken part over the previous track... This unreleased album was used in the Kiss mix series, but this very same sequence was first used in MPB 6 in 2005.
- ( )

06:56 Pierre Henry & Pierre Schaeffer - Symphonie Pour Un Homme Seul: Erotica - (1950)
- Schaeffer was a French composer, noted as the inventor of musique concrete. He is generally acknowledged as being the first composer to make music using magnetic tape. Henry makes (in 1949) the decisive meeting with Pierre Schaeffer, with whom he forms the GRM (Group of musical research), dedicated to the experimentation in "concrete music". Talk about standing on the shoulders of giants...

07:11 Fizzarum - Phut of Plex - (City Centre Offices, 1999)
- A Russian IDM duo consisting of Dimitry Dubov & Dimitry Letahovsky
- ( )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Fizzarum-Phut-Of ... lease/1544 )

10:30 Pauline Oliveros - Procession (Peregrinacion) - (Deep Listening, 1998)
- American Composer, performer and author, born in 1932. In the early '60s, Oliveros, with Morton Subotnick and Ramon Sender, formed the San Francisco Tape Music Center, and there she began her pioneering work with electronics and tape. In performances, Oliveros uses an accordion which has been re-tuned in two different systems of her just intonation in addition to electronics to alter the sound of the accordion. Throughout the years, she has developed the Extended Instrument System (EIS), a sophisticated setup of digital signal processors designed for use in live performances.
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Pauline-Oliveros ... ase/658887 )

11:41 Luc Ferrari - Presque Rien Avec Filles - (BV Haast Records, 1989)
- Another legend/giant. He joined "Groupe de Musique concrète" in 1958, remaining until 1966, and collaborated with Pierre Schaeffer in setting up "Groupe de recherches musicales" (1958). In 1965 and 1966 he produced with Gérard Patris for ORTF "Les grandes répétitions", a series of television documentaries on contemporary music.
- ( )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/release/261671 )

12:11 - Martin Sheen as Capt. Willard - "He knew more about what I was going to do than I did..." - (from Apocalypse Now, 1979 movie)

12:26 The Advisory Circle - Hocusing for Beginners - (Ghost Box, 2008)
- Jon Brooks composes music for for film and television, produces and engineers music for other artists, and is the long-term mastering engineer for Trunk Records, and also runs the record label Cafe Kaput.
- What's even more interesting here is the label, Ghost Box, an independent music venture (ran by Jim Jupp and Julian House, the graphic designer) for artists who find inspiration in library music albums, folklore, vintage electronics, and the school music room. Inspired by spooky vintage electronics of the 1970s, the label soon found itself described as part of an emerging 'hauntology' scene. FSOL use a lot of their releases, like they are subscribed or something...

14:35 Nurse With Wound - Russolo, A Little Fella on Very Ordinary Legs (On The Verge of Getting It On) - (United Dairies, 1998)

- ( http://www.discogs.com/Nurse-With-Wound ... ase/216733 )

15:00 Herbert Eimert & Robert Beyer - Klangstudie II - (1951-1962)
- Herbert Eimert (born 1897 in Germany) was a composer and a musicologist who studied at the Music Conservatory of Cologne. He worked as a journalist and joined the station as a music editor and programmer. Together with sound engineer & colleague Robert Beyer (born 1901 in Germany), he succeeded in founding the famous Electronic Studio in 1951. From 1953, Eimert invited Karlheinz Stockhausen & Gottfried Michael Koenig to work in the studio he directed until 1962.
- I must say I knew nothing about these legends. Will keep digging further.

28:15 ????? - ?????
- Unknown part, but I do hear some Mello Hippo Disco Show (Slo-Mo) samples.

29:22 Steven Jesse Bernstein - The Sport (Part Two) - (Sub Pop, 1992)
- Samples from this largely spoken word album (Prison) by Steven Jesse Bernstein were used in the Kiss mixes (1992) what the album was brand new. The most famous bit 'More Noise Please' was first heard on the '95 BBC mix and later on the legendary MPB 1. This bit however is for the first time used here in this mix.
- Steven Jay "Jesse" Bernstein (1950–1991) was a Jewish American underground writer and performance artist who is most famous for his recordings with Sub Pop records and close relationship with William S. Burroughs. Bernstein's substance abuse issues and mental illness contributed to his provocative local celebrity, though they ultimately culminated in his suicide.
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Steven-Jesse-Ber ... ase/597609 )

29:44 Arthur Lyman - Ebb Tide - (HiFi Records, 1960)

- The second unknown tune. Sounds like the Exotica styles but mixed up a bit...

32:30 Ennio Morricone - Ninna Nanna Per Adulteri - (1969)

- ( http://www.discogs.com/Brian-Eno-David- ... se/1037507 )

36:17 Bruce Haack - Electric to Me Turn - (Columbia, 1970)
- Canadian Bruce Clinton Haack (b. 1931) is one of the pioneers of electronic music during the 50's and 60's. Prolific composer behind a huge span of wildly creative, from electronic children's songs to satanic music; as well as being an inventor of weird musical instruments like the Theremin-inspired Magic Wand and the Dermatron, a device that worked off the natural conductivity of the human body. Haack's robotic songs were a precedent to the work of Synth Pop artists from the 70's such as Kraftwerk and Gary Numan, and his quasy-psychedelic electronic music was a clear influence in the Space Rock music.

38:56 Morton Feldman - Voices and Cello - (1973)
- Feldman (b. 1926 in NYC) was a pioneer of indeterminate music, a development associated with the experimental New York School of composers also including John Cage, Christian Wolff, and Earle Brown. Feldman's works are characterized by notational innovations that he developed to create his characteristic sound: rhythms that seem to be free and floating; pitch shadings that seem softly unfocused; a generally quiet and slowly evolving music; recurring asymmetric patterns.

- ( http://www.discogs.com/Morton-Feldman-O ... se/1153201 )

39:25 Andy Fairley - Jack The Biscuit - (On-U Sound, 1991)
- Andy Fairley (Bristol, UK) was a modern-day poet; a shrewd observer of the injustices and insanities of the modern world, his prose often tackled head-on issues of the moment such as the state of politics, privatisation and the plight of the underclasses. His raw style of vocal delivery perfectly and powerfully complimented the reality issues he often addressed.

Post by Ross »

This mix was made much earlier in 2008 and was intended to preview Environments II (hence having several track from it) - obviously this never happened so it wasn't quite as exciting as it could have been. Imagine all those unknown tracks in one mix!
Pandemonium wrote: 11:41 Luc Ferrari - Presque Rien No. 1 (Le Lever Du Jour Au Bord De La Mer) - (Deutsche Grammophon, 1970)[/b]
It's actually Presque rien avec filles (1989), the third in the series.

Big Ferrari fan here. His second Presque Rien (my favourite) has turned up in a couple of my mixes.
39:25 Andy Fairley - Jack The Biscuit - (On-U Sound, 1991)
Fucking love this.
44:19 The Future Sound of London - Somewhere - (unreleased)
- Another unreleased gem, probably planned for some of the following Archives series. Intense breaks.
'Gyrated' on Archive 6.
1:44:30 Vashti Bunyan - 17 Pink Sugar Elephants - (1963)
- Bunyan released her debut album, Just Another Diamond Day, in 1970. The album sold very few copies, and Bunyan, discouraged, abandoned her musical career. By 2000, her album had acquired a cult following; it was re-released and Bunyan recorded more songs, initiating the second phase of her musical career after a gap of thirty years.
FSOL link: her 'comeback' album was produced by Max Richter.
2:10:50 Second Thought - Street - (Jerky Oats Records, 2007)
- Our own FSOLboard resident admin Ross Baker featured in an FSOL mix for the second time. Brilliant.
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Second-Thought-V ... ase/973688 )
Brian really likes this track. It's actually one of my least favourite tracks from my albums.
2:48:18 The Future Sound of London - Yage (Bejing) - (unreleased)
- Another incredible unreleased version of Yage. That single would've been fucking amazing...
Probably not - according to Gaz, the third and final single from Dead Cities was due to be Glass, surprisingly.

It's rare I get chance to listen to EBS2 in one go (although I did once listen to the first six in one sitting!) but it really is an incredible mix, this one. I enjoy EBS 1 + 3, but this was the point where it really felt like FSOL was back.

Yeah, fucking amazing this thing, with all the hauntology/obscure retro-futurism stuff. Btw wasn't the name of the Belbury Poly-guy Jim Jupp? Or is that another Julian House-alias?

I made a 3 CD boxset out of this, complete with front and backcover :) it's better for listening - makes a toilet pause every 60 minutes :D .

You're right Dennis - I made a typo there.
Belbury Poly is Jim Jupp.

Jim Jupp and Julian House are founders of Ghost Box records.

Ross,
- You're right about the Luc Ferrari piece & Gyrated - dunno how I missed that :)
- also - it makes sense for this mix to promote Env-II.

- Bunyan / Richter link is also amazing.

- I love Street too, it is just a good piece of music.

- With so many Yage/Hallucination versions - I refuse to believe it wasn't single ready :)
- They had Brian Eno lined up for Glass - that would've been something...

FSOL - Electric Brain Storms Vol.3 (Frisky Radio, The Genre Show)
[radio mix] (26.09.2008)

Image

The third volume of the Electric Brain Storms continued mixing the obscure experimental electronic sounds from every possible decade. Though I must say, this one focuses largely on new electronic music, because most of the tracks are barely a couple of years old. Also, if we don't count EBS 2 because it was actually aired after EBS 3, then here we have the first airing of entirely new FSOL material in several years, the track called 'Summer's Dream', which will end up on Environments 3 a couple of years later. EBS 3 aired on UK's Frisky Radio, on DJ Kira's The Genre Show.

- Electric Brain Storms Vol.3 - deconstructed and explained - headphones on - read away...

09:25 Monstrance - Chaingang - (Ape House, 2007)
- A trio of Andy Partridge (songwriter/singer/guitarist rooting in the mid-70's Punk/New Wave hype), Barry Andrews & Martyn Barker (drummer).
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Monstrance-Monst ... ase/951204 )

13:59 Chris Carter - Slomo - (Industrial Records, 1980)
- A legend in the world of electronic music. He founded Throbbing Gristle, with P-Orridge and Tutti in 1975.
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Chris-Carter-The ... ase/814386 )

17:27 Arthur Lyman - Ebb Tide - (HiFi Records, 1960)
- Born 1932 in Hawaii, Lyman was one of the people credited with creating Exotica which is noted for Afro-Cuban rhythms, unusual instruments, jungle animal sounds, and romantic tone. The other Exotica creator was Martin Denny, the guy who was tributed in The Sounds of Monsterism Island Vol.1
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Arthur-Lyman-Tab ... se/1255180 )

17:38 Arne Nordheim - Colorazione - (Philips, 1969)
- Arne Nordheim (b. 1931) was a Norwegian composer. He started out as an organ and theory student at the Oslo Conservatory (1948–52), but later turned to composition, studying with Karl Andersen, Bjarne Brustad, Conrad Baden and Holmboe. He also studied musique concrète in Paris (1955) and electronic music in Bilthoven (1959).
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Arne-Nordheim-Co ... ase/506654 )

18:07 Max Richter - Broken Symmetries for Y - (130701, 2008)
- Max Richter (b. 1966) is a German-born British composer. He co-founded the contemporary classical ensemble Piano Circus, with which he stayed for ten years. He's close friend and collaborator with FSOL to the present day.
- ( )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Max-Richter-24-P ... se/1440007 )

19:11 - Radio talk about musical outfits and their initials...
- LSO = London Symphony Orchestra
- FSOL = First Symphony of London - :) priceless...

19:12 Terry Riley - A Rainbow In Curved Air - (Columbia Masterworks, 1969)
- Riley is credited as being the principal instigator of the minimalist/repetitive music genre. He was also the disciple of Indian classical vocalist Pandit Pran Nath.

- Another one from 24 Postcards In Full Colour, a profound album.
- ( )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Max-Richter-24-P ... se/1440007 )

25:35 The Future Sound of London - Summer's Dream - (unreleased, later on FSOLdigital.com, 2010)
- One of the new FSOL tracks. These sessions likely started in 2006 and were on and off in the years to follow. Summer's Dream doesn't have the modern classical feel that Viewed from Above and Small Town had on Environments 2, so maybe it's from some later sessions.

29:33 - Jeff Morrow as Exeter - "Now turn the control 18 degrees to the left" - (from This Island Earth, 1955 movie)

29:37 The Future Sound of London - Environment F1 (Birds) - (FSOLdigital.com, 2007)

30:02 Elite Barbarian - Soft Remind - (Front and Follow, 2008)
- The guy is named Ben Page and he's from UK, possibly Manchester - and that's all I could dig out.
- ( )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Elite-Barbarian- ... se/1483627 )

35:10 Cassetteboy - ?????
- The spoken words...
- It wouldn't be an FSOL mix if there wasn't for that unknown track.
- Originally from Chelmsford in Essex, Cassetteboy consists of two semi-anonymous characters known only to the world as Mike and Simon. The name originates from their use of cassette recorders (now replaced by computers) to cut up voice and music samples.Mike describes the musical philosophy behind Cassetteboy: "Basically we record famous people and make it sound like they're talking about sex or drugs. It's a winning formula."

35:58 The Advisory Circle - The Old Schoolhouse - (Ghost Box, 2008)
- Jon Brooks composes music for for film and television, produces and engineers music for other artists, and is the long-term mastering engineer for Trunk Records, and also runs the record label Cafe Kaput.
- The label, Ghost Box, an independent music venture (ran by Jim Jupp and Julian House, the graphic designer) for artists who find inspiration in library music albums, folklore, vintage electronics, and the school music room. Inspired by spooky vintage electronics of the 1970s, the label soon found itself described as part of an emerging 'hauntology' scene.
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Advisory-Circle- ... se/1266761 )

38:15 impLOG - Holland Tunnel Dive - (Infidelity, 1980)
- Don Christensen & Jody Harris - American musicians during the NY's No Wave age.

- ( http://www.discogs.com/impLOG-Holland-T ... ase/318411 )

42:13 The Jazz Mags - Open Window - (unreleased, later on FSOLdigital.com, 2014)
- Well, this will be released 6 years later. A mixture of synths and percussion in a free-form jazz style, a rather interesting experiment. And since it's been pointed out to me, I always smile when I see the band alias - apparently Jazz mags is a UK jargon for porn magazines.

47:34 Zakir Hussain - Water Girl - (ECM Records, 1987)
- A personal favorite of mine. Hussain is a virtuoso tabla player (b. 1951 in India), son of Alla Rakha.

49:57 Can - Spray - (United Artists Records, 1973)
- German experimental rock band formed in Cologne circa 1968, initially as Inner Space and becoming "The Can" when fronted by black American singer Malcolm Mooney. Can are well-known as one of the key pioneers of Krautrock, particularly during the era when fronted by Japanese singer Kenji "Damo" Suzuki who "turned their sound towards a crazy mixture of improvisation, noise, mantra and funk rhythms". They were constantly at the forefront of the scene during their 10+ year history, composed music for a number of esteemed feature films, and their pop satire single "I Want More" became an international hit.
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Can-Future-Days/release/1633098 )

52:42 Stephen Mallinder - Del Sol - (Fetish Records, 1983)
- British singer/musician, ex member of Cabaret Voltaire.
- ( )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Various-The-Last ... ase/227303 )

58:22 The Future Sound of London - Viewed from Above - (FSOLdigital.com, 2008)
- A fitting end with another new composition. Strings, synths and whale sounds...

60:00 Transmission end

09:25 Monstrance - Chaingang - (Ape House, 2007)
- A trio of Andy Partridge (songwriter/singer/guitarist rooting in the mid-70's Punk/New Wave hype), Barry Andrews & Martyn Barker (drummer).
- ( http://www.discogs.com/Monstrance-Monst ... ase/951204 )
I love XTC, I really need to listen to Monstrance more.
19:11 - Radio talk about musical outfits and their initials...
- LSO = London Symphony Orchestra
- FSOL = First Symphony of London - :) priceless...
From legendary long-running University Challenge. Wish I'd watched this episode!
God, I remember hearing this for the first time. The "you've been waiting a long time..." quote was a stroke of genius, a brilliant wink to us fans who've been desperate for something confirmed as 'new' material. Still one of my favourite FSOL tracks to this day. I think the choir samples lend it a bit of a modern classical edge.
38:15 impLOG - Holland Tunnel Dive - (Infidelity, 1980)
- Don Christensen & Jody Harris - American musicians during the NY's No Wave age.
- ( )
- ( http://www.discogs.com/impLOG-Holland-T ... ase/318411 )
Was always disappointed that this was cut short - the track has an amazing saxophone section near the end.

I think EBS3 is probably the most underwhelming of the eight full length mixes in the series, the two unreleased-at-the-time tracks aside, but it's still a marvellous set. Reminds me of the whole summer/autumn of 2008 when it was a really exciting time to be an FSOL fan - starting with Environments on CD and ending with all the ISDN shows in The Pod Room.

I've become a huge Ian Hicks fan in the last 6 months, after getting into an argument with him last year over a lost cassette. Lol
play this backwards and you'll hear evil messages

Didn't the station want it cut up into three separate hours or something?
