Thing is, a lot of music (probably most music, really) is about individual songs rather than a flowing soundscape. Segues work where they're needed.

After countless editions of remastered editions the music industry should incorporate a new trend of 'resegued editions' of all the classic albums for the lovers of segued together music - :D

well ross i would argue that is the difference between singles and an album :)

i'm just a big fan (as i know you all are) of the album.....listening from start to finish. so imo the segues just go hand in hand with that notion.

Graham mentioned the Enhanced Archives would be on FSOLDigital at some point this year. Not sure if they'll be replacing the originals or supplementing them (although replacing makes sense - absolutely no point in having both for sale.)

There aren't many segued Ozric tracks:

'Kick Muck/Agog in the Ether' from 'Pungent Effulgent' (1989)
'Yog-Bar-Og/Arborescence' from 'Arborescence' (1994)
'Ahu Belahu/Ghedengi' and 'Become the Other/Vibuthi' from 'Become the Other' (1995)
'Bolshem/Armchair Journey' from 'The Floor's Too Far Away' (2006)
'Oolong Oolong' and 'Yumyum Tree' from 'The Yumyum Tree' (2009)

if I remember correctly...

Pande-reviews: 2006.1 (FSOL - EBS Vol.0,5)

FSOL - Electric Brain Storms Vol.0,5 (BBC Radio 6 Mix) [radio mix] (10.10.2006)
first official release 15.11.2008, currently unavailable

Image

This mix was created for promotion of the 'Best of FSOL' compilation - at least that was the initial intention, but it ended up being so much more than that. This mix kickstarted the Electric Brain Storms mix series - a new kind of mixes that can only be defined as mixes of obscure and weird tracks from every possible decade & genre chosen without prejudice. There are lots of FSOL tracks and environments, unreleased stuff that will appear (or not) on the Archives & Environments series in the years to come. There are lots of experimental electronic tracks as well as some psychedelic tracks that featured on the MPB mixes. All in all, extremely trippy mixes that will get better and better with every next volume.

- Ward Hartenstein - Except from Claycussion - downloaded & confirmed - that it's not present in the mix - it is somewhat similar with the Bart Hopkin track...
- Dozens of tiny bits and pieces from Tired, Quagmire, Among Myselves, The Far-Out Son, etc etc are present through the mix but not listed, because they are just short 2 to 4 seconds environments for adding complexity to the mix.

So, the EBS 0,5, deconstructed (finally!) and explained - read away:
(scroll to the end of the post to see just the tracklist)

04:42 Djivan Gasparyan - A Cool Wind Is Blowing - (Land Records, 1989)
- I wouldn't say this track is an FSOL remix, it's more like there is another (IDM-like) track in the back going strong into the next track also.
- Djivan Gasparyan is probably the best Duduk player in the world. Duduk is a woodwind instrument indigenous to Armenia, with very warm and hypnotizing sound.

Pande-reviews: 2006.2 (FSOL - Kinetica + Stereo Sucks)

Post by Pandemonium »

Somewhat unrelated to FSOL's discography, at least the audio part, (but we're gonna mention them anyway, because they're cool) are these two events. FSOL's taken part at the Kinetica Museum in November and the Stereo Sucks mini-documentary about surround-sound experiments that was released on the Future Music magazine DVD in December 2006.

FSOL @ Kinetica, Life Forms event (Nov.2006)

Image

Kinetica Museum (that has no fixated venue) was co-founded by Dianne Harris and Tony Langford in 2004. Back then kinetic art made up less then 5% of the mainstream public art collections in the UK. The success of the former museum at Spitalfields in 2006-7 showed the huge appeal for this type of art on a global scale. Artists are looking across many disciplines and collaborating with scientists, cosmologists, technologists, engineers and architects to provide a greater understanding and universal knowledge into their work. Dianne Harris (Gaz's significant other) is the Art Director, worked within the applied arts for 20 years and sources work for Kinetica's revolving collection. She curates the feature exhibition at Kinetica Art Fair as well as other touring exhibitions.

So the 2006 Kinetica event was the one that kicked up this movement, and continued with a series of installations into 2007. It's an annual event today, with Art Fairs and everything. It was a very inspiring movement for FSOL too - (a few examples) it inspired the Heads of Agreement album, the In Two Minds set by Simon Venus (that was used for the Athens concert for example), the Tiny Point of Light single that was available for only a short period of time, and of-course, the whole 5.1 surround sound experiments named 'A Gigantic Globular Burst Of Antistatic' found their home in Kinetica. Most of these were released in 2007 on the FSOLDigital.com web-store, and we'll go in detail about them when we get to 2007.

A few years back I got this tracklist from one of the Kinetica installations. I don't know it was an official soundtrack to the event, but it sure sounds like one. As you can see, most of the tracks ended up on the Heads of Agreement 'The San Monta Tapes' album, except Heartsick and Globular, which remained FSOL tracks.

01. Yellow Way [6:48]
02. Magnetic Space (Earth Magic) [5:02]
03. Waves [6:02]
04. San Monta [3:18]
05. La Veshter 2 [4:43]
06. Heartsick [8:33]
07. Ukashan [3:42]
08. Globular [31:00]

FSOL - Stereo Sucks [documentary] (Dec.2006) Future Music DVD 182

Image

Stereo Sucks is a 20 minute documentary about FSOLs experiments in surround sound, and basically a 'Making of...' story of their unfinished project [that never saw the light of the day in it's proper 5.1 format] called 'A Gigantic Globular Burst Of Antistatic'. Now this was released in regular stereo in 2007 and it was web-only mp3, so we can still hope it will appear some day in it's proper format.

As usual, Gaz talks a lot here, Brian not so much (read: not at all!). Some of the talks have good points, some, not so much - but the best thing about this documentary is we get to see / hear where FSOL stand at the moment, we have a peak at Brian's church/studio, and we see the guys working together!

Now the talk about surround vs stereo, Gaz takes a strong stand of how much better surround is compared to stereo - stereo is a flat cartoon of music. I mean... come on... I'm not saying that surround is not better, but it's certainly not that much better. It's slightly better and only in some cases, but in the 95% of the cases stereo does the job just fine - we only have two ears after all :) and the brain does the rest of the job.

There's other interesting geek talk about the sound compression and all that audiophile stuff that I won't get into; I'd love to but I want to keep this thread about the music and not about the technology. People should make a difference between audiophile and a music lover/fan/collector. The audiophiles are usually people who own 100-150 records that are 'perfectly' produced (in their minds) so they don't listen to other music and they have sound-systems that cost $50.000+ (sometimes even millions). The music lover/fan/collector is the person who loves the music as an art form and spends his life in getting to know better this artform. I think the surround (porn) sound is for audiophiles/engineers only. I've always put myself in the second group (and I'm an engineer!). I mean, I wouldn't mind listening albums in surround, but just please don't oversell it with superiority - that is just stupid... That being said, I'm really really glad FSOL didn't pursue this surround adventure in the coming years, and even if we see something 5.1 from them in the years to come, I know it will not be a pretentious oversell of sound superiority.

The talk about how Gaz had to explore the psychedelic spaces and the human side of him in order to find it and retain it so he can return to technology is more than fine. The peak at the church / home / studio of Brian Dougans is just fantastic. No need for words for this one, just see the clip below.

Stereo Sucks aka 'The Making of A Gigantic Globular Burst Of Antistatic'

So, see you in 2007, the year FSOL went independent, opened the FSOLDigital.com web-shop and released 20+ releases in the first year alone!

5.1 versions of those Heads of Agreement tracks do exist - also Heart Sick was originally part of the San Monta Tapes sessions.

What do you reckon the chances of reaching 2008 by the end the year are? :D

Reaching 2008 is a daring goal :) - to the end of the year... probably not. :)
(not with all the extra activities I've put on myself...)

This is also the breaking point where I will go back to the Kiss mixes for another pass :) - there are gems there that need to be discovered.
- But it shouldn't take more than a month with the Kiss mixes ... :)

Also, take a look at the OP (or the first post in this thread, I'm not a forum person and I don't know if OP is the right name)
- I tweaked it more for better visibility :)

So is that 8 min Heart Sick Track from Kinetica soundtrack the same thing that ended up as Heart Sick Chord from Env3? Interesting, never knew that.
